Psychiatric Nursing Asst. IV

The hospitals provide state-of-the-art treatment that is recovery-oriented and science-based. The PNA Supervisor is directly supervised by the Nurse Educator and is responsible for assisting the Nurse Educator in screening and interviewing external applicants for the Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I positions for Nursing Administration. Work involves planning, organizing and assisting the Nurse Educator in training staff in psychiatric rehabilitation and social learning principles. Assists the Nurse Educator in monitoring and evaluating trainees, work procedures and performance. Works with the new employees to ensure that each receives the support and training needed to be successful in their new job to promote retention.
The PNA Supervisor consults with and coordinates activities with the Nurse Educator, Human Resources, Nurse Managers and appropriate program staff.
The PNA Supervisor works under minimal supervision and offers extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Completion of work requires use of established methods and/or techniques, and decisions are varied but based on well-defined guidelines.
This position occasionally requires the development of new teaching methods and/or techniques. He/She demonstrates and models' skills to enable trainees to assist the patient in participating in their Individualized Treatment Plan while ensuring a safe, therapeutic, social learning environment. Must understand that duties, location of work and shift patterns are subject to change as determined by the nursing administration to meet the needs of the hospital.
The PNA Supervisor has no financial responsibility but is accountable for assigned property.

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Coordinates PNA trainee’s schedules with Facility Competency and Development, Nurse Manager’s and other department’s to promote an organized orientation and learning experience.
Works with assigned program staff to ensure new PNA’s receive a general orientation to their assigned program.
Participates in and promotes positive interactions; modeling the principles of social learning and demonstrating respect for each individual.
Works collaboratively with the Assistant Chief Nurse Executive to ensure screening, interviewing and selecting of qualified PNA staff for the hospitals PRN Psychiatric Nursing Assistant lines for the Vernon Campus.
Assists the Nurse Educator to initiate and complete a competency and performance file for each new employee; to be provided to the Nurse Manager at the conclusion of CSD training.
Participates in nursing recruitment and retention efforts for the hospital and prepares, edits and distributes reports as requested.
Maintains own competence, including age specific and program specific requirements by developing and maintaining job related skills through active provision of quality patient care.
Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor within the established time frames.
Actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligation for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activations.

Must demonstrate competency within the assigned time frame in the following:
Ability to intervene therapeutically with patients experiencing delusions, hallucinations, and/or aggression

Group Process to include; Unit Advisor Role, Independent Grooming and Personal Area Management
Seclusion of Patient and Application of Approved Personal and Mechanical Restraints
Special Precautions/Enhanced Observation/Documentation
Age specific competencies will be obtained through specific program training modules, as outlined below

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
This position requires a valid drivers license (class C) and ability to drive a state vehicle when necessary.

Initial Selection Criteria:
Has a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
Two (2) years of experience providing PNA direct care services at NTSH; with a minimum of one (1) year of required work experience having been in a lead worker capacity (PNA III, OR IV) OR A minimum of two years of educational classroom instruction regarding staff competency and policy and procedure in a hospital setting.
Evidence of effective written communication skills as evidenced by complete and accurate application with minimal errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Experience providing training to new employees.
Experience in a variety of software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Willingness to travel with this position is required.
Willingness to work hours other than 8-5 and days other than Monday-Friday.

This position is an 8-5 Monday thru Friday position, but will be required to work other hours and days as needed to perform training, attend job fairs and to make sure that there is adequate coverage in the Nursing Education Department.
When an individual is selected for an interview, there will be a timed skills/task assessment that will be required and presented during the initial interview process.
You will need to be proficient in Outlook, Excel, Power Point and Word Programs in order to complete the skills/task assessment.
A score of 70% or higher will be required on the skills/task assessment to proceed to/secure a verbal interview.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals.
