The Opportunity

The Proofreader II/Program Assistant will proofread and copyedit materials as well as provide general project support to project coordinators, project managers, and other staff. To be considered for this position, applicant must pass the Assessment Design and Development Proofreading Test. 


Core Focus Areas

The Proofreader II/Program Assistant will proofread and copyedit materials as well as provide general project support to project coordinators, project managers, and other staff. To be considered for this position, applicant must pass the Assessment Design and Development Proofreading Test. 

The Proofreader II/Program Assistant will work directly with project staff to:

  • Conduct activities collaboratively with the other members of the proofreading/copyediting team. 
  • Perform data entry tasks in Microsoft software as well as custom tools utilized in the program.
  • Complete tasks with moderate autonomy, escalating concerns appropriately and making occasional recommendations about task scope.
  • Ensure that test items, forms, and related materials adhere to project style guidelines. Use support tools, such as style guides, the Internet, and project documentation, to act as a project resource on style. When appropriate, ask pertinent clarifying questions about support tools, make suggestions for project-level style guide clarifications, and assist in designing processes and resources specific to project tasks.
  • Track and verify edits in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat, among other tasks involved in the quality-control process.
  • Proofread and copyedit test items, test forms, and related materials used in statewide assessments, as well as research and development products.
  • Assist with general administrative support tasks, such as preparing materials for meetings or proposals, as needed.
  • Serve as “lead proofreader” for a specific project, ensuring that documentation for the style and tasks are kept up to date, in collaboration with the project coordinator.

What We’re Looking For

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities.
  • Excellent grasp of the English language.
  • Demonstrable proofreading experience (2+ years).
  • Ability to work with high levels of concentration and accuracy under real-time deadlines.
  • Excellent proofreading skills.
  • Command of Microsoft office products.
  • Ability to research and find information online and via other sources.
  • Passing score on the Assessment Design and Development Proofreading Test (administered during interview process).
  • Ability to work as a team member.

Other degrees, skills, abilities, and experiences of interest

  • A bachelor's degree in English or related field desired.
  • Familiarity with test development process preferred.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation for this temporary role is $50 per hour.
