Public Design Commission

Position Title: Project Coordinator

The Team You’ll Work With:
Established in 1898, the Public Design Commission reviews architecture, landscape architecture, and
works of art on City-owned property. Projects include construction or restoration of structures, such as

libraries, fire stations, and bridges; creation or renovation of parks, playgrounds, and plazas; installation
of lighting and other streetscape elements; and the design, installation, and conservation of artwork.

The Commission holds monthly hearings to review projects, which are primarily submitted by City
agencies. There are 11 Commissioners, who serve pro bono, and five full-time staff members. The

Commission also acts as caretaker and curator of the City's public art collection and maintains an

extensive archive documenting the history of New York City's public works, which is frequently used by
historians, students, and other City agencies. The Commission is an advocate for excellence and

innovation in the public realm, ensuring the viability and quality of public programs and services
throughout the city for years to come.

The Problems You’ll Solve
The Project coordinator’s primary responsibility is to manage coordination of all aspects of the monthly

design review and public hearings process. This includes reviewing submission materials; and preparing

detailed agendas; and other relevant documents as deemed necessary by the Executive Director. This

also includes, working with the Executive Director to implement new systems for streamlining

operations to meet design excellence, while maximizing efficiency.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Help PDC staff coordinate the project review portfolio of architecture, landscape

architecture, and streetscape design project, and organize information and maintain
coordination with City Hall for high priority and complex projects.

  • Attend and assist with recurring administration meetings, community outreach meetings,
and any other meetings that the Executive Director deems necessary.
  • Help PDC staff manage special initiatives related to the PDC’s strategic plan, such as

identifying creative ways to leverage technology to streamline project review procedures

and help create a PDC public awareness campaign and associated graphic materials to bring
wider awareness on the role of the PDC in shaping NYC’s public realm.

  • Help keep PDC’s website up to date, and with any upgrades with oversight from relevant

PDC staff. Coordinate with MIS, and OTI to implement changes.

  • Assist in organizing monthly agendas and review certificates before Director, and Executive
Director approval.
  • Work with designated PDC staff on day-to-day management of office administration, and
operation including supplies, scheduling, and technological needs.
  • Coordinate responses to outside inquiries, such as press, community, or individual
applicants with the Executive Director

About You
  • Graduation from an accredited university with a graduate degree in architecture, urban
design, or related field preferred
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience, with familiarity managing projects,

including budget and schedule

  • Experience with creating architectural drawings, and familiarity with landscape architecture
and environmental design.
  • Familiarity with project managing capital review processes in NYC agencies, preferred but not
required.
  • Strong organization and entrepreneurial skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficiency with Adobe Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, a plus.

Salary
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary,

equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role is
$ 65,000 – $ 85,000.

Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other
factors.
