POSITION SUMMARY:
The Professional Writing Center Tutor is a full-time, 30-hour per week, academic year position, reporting to the Director of Writing Center. This position teaches undergraduate and graduate students academic writing and research skills, in subject areas across campus, for both native speakers of English and ESL students. This is accomplished through one-on-one tutoring sessions, group work, online tutoring, and classroom presentations. The person in this position also actively promotes Writing Center services and both researches and shares best practices for tutoring writing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach students the skills needed for effective oral presentations
- Teach students to develop strategies for effective college-level writing and facility with the recursive stages of the writing process: selecting a topic, brainstorming, outlining, drafting, organization, research, documentation, revision, proofreading, and final editing
- Impart knowledge of academic conventions: syntax, grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, mechanics, and capitalization
- Focus on higher-order concerns before surface-level errors, encouraging deep inquiry and critical thinking
- Provide online tutoring for all aspects of the writing process
- Guide students in development of consistency with academic format, structure, tone, clarity, and level of formality in the context of designated rhetorical situations, in subject areas across campus
- Stay current about best practices for writing centers
- Support ESL students in developing and enhancing their English skills in reading and writing
- Tutor students at a wide range of skill levels, including students with physical and learning disabilities. Use discretion in evaluating students' skill levels and applying a variety of tutoring strategies.
- Create flyers and billboards to promote the Writing Center and encourage student utilization
- Oversee Writing Lab, ensuring that all needed materials are brought to the designated computer lab each week
- Coach students in the proper uses of quotation, paraphrase, and summary in developing research papers
- Actively participate in the planning and implementation of the annual National Day on Writing
- Apply knowledge of Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA), and Chicago Manual Style (CMS) for research citations and documentation. Support students in avoiding plagiarism and upholding academic integrity.
- Teach students how to effectively locate, evaluate, analyze, and synthesize credible scholarly sources, both print and online, and integrate their own ideas with the ideas of others
- Collaborate with faculty to ensure that student needs are met
- Offer classroom presentations, with PowerPoints and handouts, for: MLA, APA, and Chicago Style format, citation, and documentation; Reading Comprehension; Thesis Development; Revision; Peer Review; and an Overview of Writing Center Services, developing additional specialized classroom presentations upon request
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability and commitment to encouraging student engagement and academic development
- Master's Degree in English or a related field
- Experience tutoring in a college writing center, and/or experience working as a college English/Writing instructor
- Flexibility for scheduling that includes day and evening hours
- Experience working effectively with a student body that is diverse in age, academic preparation, culture, economic status, ethnicity, gender, national origin, orientation, and race is strongly preferred
- Experience working with ESL students is preferred
Additional Information:
- 30 hours per week with a possibility of additional hours if needed
- The schedule above may vary semester to semester
- This is an in-person appointment. Some tutoring will be done online, but it is not a remote position
- Academic year (semesters): Mid-August through Mid-December, Mid-January through Mid-May
- Regular schedule: Monday-Thursday 12pm-6pm, Friday 10am-4:30pm. Hours to be adjusted as needed, including evening and weekend hours
- This is a benefits eligible position
