At our core, Western Digital is a company of problem solvers. People achieve extraordinary things given the right technology. For decades, we’ve been doing just that. Our technology helped people put a man on the moon.

We are a key partner to some of the largest and highest growth organizations in the world. From energizing the most competitive gaming platforms, to enabling systems to make cities safer and cars smarter and more connected, to powering the data centers behind many of the world’s biggest companies and public cloud, Western Digital is fueling a brighter, smarter future.

Binge-watch any shows, use social media or shop online lately? You’ll find Western Digital supporting the storage infrastructure behind many of these platforms. And, that flash memory card that captures and preserves your most precious moments? That’s us, too.

We offer an expansive portfolio of technologies, storage devices and platforms for business and consumers alike. Our data-centric solutions are comprised of the Western Digital®, G-Technology™, SanDisk® and WD® brands.

Today’s exceptional challenges require your unique skills. It’s You & Western Digital. Together, we’re the next BIG thing in data.

We are seeking a world-class Firmware Engineer for the Embedded Firmware System Design Verification team developing a wide variety of advanced next-generation high performance storage system enclosures for the OEM and data center marketplace. You will have demonstrated leadership ability executing complex programs and an understanding of the who, what and how of system development. You will have strong skills and experience in the computer server and storage industry including familiarization with embedded storage processors, storage protocols, and servers. This is a high-impact, high visibility opportunity for the right individual with superior technical skills, good project management abilities, and an enthusiasm for success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive issue resolution and product stability to enable predictable and high quality product development
  • Identify hardware design flaws and BOM incompatibility issues
  • Integrate low-level diagnostics with manual analysis to incrementally and rapidly regress the circuits under test
  • Support integration with existing DCS continuous integration automation frameworks
  • Generate requirements for hardware features required to support board bring-up, debug, verification, and diagnostics of low-level FW/HW interfaces and low-level system interfaces
  • Develop processes to identify embedded system design issues early in the product development lifecycle
  • Identify manufacturing process errors and recommend process improvements
  • Uncover marginal timing and other related design issues in the hardware
  • Create Diagnostics and Built in Self-Test (BIST) software tools
  • Develop Firmware/Software to aide in circuit board design validation (electrically and functionally)
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including FW, EE, ME, and Manufacturing to bring-up and integrate sub-systems into the overall system as well as debug and diagnose root causes of verification failures
  • Review system and board level designs (schematics, BOMs, etc.) to ensure all verification and diagnostic requirements are properly implemented
  • Generate specifications for FW features needed for circuit board and system design validation per requirements provided by HW verification engineering and HW design teams
  • Review system and board level specification to ensure all verification and diagnostic requirements are properly incorporated

Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • In-depth storage protocol experience with SAS, SCSI, NVMe, NVMeOF, and PCIe
  • Ability to read electrical specifications, identify potential issues/high risk areas, and recommend solutions
  • Demonstrated microcontroller development experience using C/C++/Assembly
  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science (or related field)
  • Strong debugging skills using kernel mode debuggers and electrical circuit test equipment such as logic analyzers and bus analyzers
  • Ability to debug RTOS issues using JTAG, UART, and other interfaces
  • 8+ years of experience with storage product embedded systems development
  • Knowledge of software design, real-time operating systems, and hardware-software interfaces
  • Linux & Windows scripting experience (Python is bonus)

SKILLS

  • Knowledge of agile development and self-managed development teams from design to production
  • Strong team player, effective communication skills, and highly motivated
  • Demonstrated ability in creative problem solving and innovation
