pRINCIPAL | DIRECTOR OF Finance – Cambridge, MA

Reporting to the President, the Principal | Director of Finance is responsible for directing the financial and accounting practices and procedures of the firm. It is anticipated that the Acentech Board of Directors will appoint this person as Treasurer. This leader plays a critical role in establishing the strategic direction and implementation of the finance function in support of business imperatives. The role is for a strategist, partnering with the President and Senior Leadership Team on development and execution of our strategic plans. You will oversee the treasury, accounting, budget, tax and audit activities of the entire organization. You will manage the financial and accounting system controls and standards and ensure timely financial and statistical reports for management, lenders and business partners who may require them. You will lead, mentor, and supervise the accounting staff, and provide financial education and training across the organization. This position is based in our Cambridge, MA headquarters; like all of Acentech, this position is hybrid (employees can choose to work in-person or remotely under most circumstances), with a flexible schedule.


Financial Management, Analysis, and Reporting


  • Assist the President and BoD in establishing and implementing short and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures, particularly as they pertain to fiscal responsibility, risk management, and financial goals.
  • Benchmark the financial and operating performance of the firm against peer groups and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinate firm’s financial planning, annual operating and capital budgets, and long-term financial plans consistent with company objectives.
  • Perform cash flow forecasting and reporting.
  • Oversee the Controller, whose duties include compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements and accurate and timely tax returns and related filings.
  • Oversee cash management, manage the line of credit and other treasury functions.
  • Work with Controller and outside CPAs on tax planning, the annual review and indirect rate audits.
  • Manage financial software and data.
  • Prepare monthly management reports for BoD and other reports as needed and communicate financial performance and trends to the BoD and senior Leadership throughout the year.
  • Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget at the enterprise and project level.
  • Provide oversight of accounting functions (payroll, AR/AP, collections, etc.), and oversee and maintain the high level of performance of our accounting staff.
  • Recommend major economic objectives and policies for the firm.
  • Work with the President and management team to develop / maintain the firm’s five-year business plans.
  • Make recommendations to improve firm’s financial and project management functions.
  • Work closely with the President and bank officer to manage debt financing and debt service payments.


Project Related


  • Review client contracts and NDAs, including insurance requirements, billing rates, and other terms. (Or, oversee the administration of outside contracts review).
  • Oversee the project accounting lifecycle.
  • Provide financial training for project managers and emerging project managers.
  • Assist management (Group Directors) with revenue forecasts, and project financial performance.
  • Facilitate project financial review meetings.


Other / Corporate Duties


  • Oversee and administer the Acentech ESOP. Liaise with outside advisors for annual valuation.
  • Negotiate leases for Acentech offices.
  • Coordinate with insurance provider(s) and legal counsel with respect to claims or potential claims.
  • Review and advise the President on insurance coverage at the company, branch and project levels.
  • Special projects as required.
  • Manage the 401k Plan.
  • Monitor compliance with ownership issues as set forth in Acentech’s Articles of Organization.
  • Advise the President and Board of Directors on general policy matters that are governed by Acentech’s Articles of Organization.
  • Maintain shareholder records, oversee purchase and sale of Acentech shares.


Requirements


Experience and Education


  • Prior experience with Deltek Vantagepoint a plus but not required.
  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance. CPA or MBA highly preferred but not required
  • In-depth knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and FAR cost principles and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ten+ year’s prior experience as a controller or accounting leadership in private industry with a concentration in a professional services firm. Experience with A/E/C industries highly desired.
  • Knowledge of requirements for working with government agencies and related audits.
  • Familiarity working in an organization with multiple office sites preferred.
  • Proven experience working with project-based accounting software, Microsoft Office suite, and related software products.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Knowledge or experience of public accounting helpful.
