The King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) is seeking a professional Polygraph Examiner to administer examinations for criminal investigations and pre-employment background investigations. This specialized body of work requires adherence to the highest ethical standards, the ability to administer exams using current interviewing/interrogation methods.
The Polygraph Examiner will report to the KCSO Criminal Investigations Unit and be an integral member of the Human Resources background investigation team. We are looking for professionals who share the Sheriff’s Office Mission and Core Values of Leadership, Integrity, Service and Teamwork. - As required, interview and interrogate suspects, victims, witnesses, and other persons involved in the KCSO related investigations.
- Conduct polygraph examinations, intensive pre-test interviews and post-test interrogations for deputy and civilian candidates seeking employment with the KCSO.
- Write legally admissible statements on all examinations.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate polygraph instruments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Interact with detectives and prosecutors on court testimony.
- Prepares comprehensive and confidential investigative reports, prepare expert testimony for King County District and Superior Court.
- Score and evaluate polygraph charts for suitability and analysis.
To be considered for this position, applicants must be certified as a polygraph examiner, and meet the following requirements:
- Professional experience operating within a medium to large, complex, and diverse organization.
- Knowledge and understanding of Federal and local laws relating to pre-employment investigations.
- Skilled in learning and applying new policies and procedures in accordance with changing laws and regulations.
- Proof of certification as a polygraph examiner from a program that meets the American Polygraph Association (APA) or American Association of Police Polygraphers (AAPP) accreditation standards.
- Associate membership with APA or AAPP.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Experience and knowledge of current interrogation techniques and criminal investigations.
- Experience in law enforcement other criminal justice agency.
- Experience working in government and/or not for profit organization.
- Full membership with APA or AAPP.
Position Information:
This position is a civil service, career service, non-exempt (overtime eligible) and represented by Public Safety Employees Union (PSEU) non-commission professional staff.
The usual work week for this position is 40 hours per week (weekdays, approximately 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Hours may vary based on business need, and may include some occasional early morning, evening, and weekend hours. This position is based at the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle.

- Oral Board Exam (interview) - late September/early October.
- Written/Technical Exam - mid-September.
