Job Description
The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is searching to fill a Helicopter Pilot position in our Aviation Unit. Salary will be determined by candidate's education, certifications, ratings, relevant experience, and total flight hours.
General Responsibility
Serve as a Pilot and Class I Law Enforcement Officer in SLED's Aviation Unit; support the enforcement of laws in South Carolina.
Specific Duties
  • Report Information: Be clear and concise in oral and written communication. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and expertise in report/flight log preparation.
  • Provide Aviation Support to Local Law Enforcement: Demonstrate appropriate expertise in FAA rules and Regulations as well as law enforcement procedures in support local law enforcement operations. Ability to perform under physical and mental stress, generally be able to appropriately communicate and work well with other local and federal agencies.
  • Perform Administrative / Maintenance Task - Perform various administrative tasks related to training, communications, special assignments, maintenance and other functional areas of law enforcement.
  • Support Program Areas - Perform various support tasks relating to programmatic duties such as the DCE/SP (Marijuana Eradication Program), Specialized Training (Night Vision Goggles), or any other duties in support of the Aviation Command Staff and the Law Enforcement Program Areas (e.g. Vice, Counter-Terrorism, Investigative Services) at SLED.
  • Perform Flight Duties: Missions include, but are not limited to search and rescue, photo flights, man hunts, marijuana eradication, SWAT missions, etc. Flights will include day and night operations.

  • Must possess FAA pilot certificate with rotorcraft rating (helicopter).
  • Must have the ability to recognize abnormal and unsafe flight operations and to initiate actions to handle in-flight emergencies.
  • Individual must be able to deal with non-routine situations in a logical and professional manner.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively and sound judgement must be exercised at all times.
  • Must have knowledge of flight planning, air navigation, meteorology and map reading.
  • Position requires routine non-standard working hours.
  • Must have knowledge of FAA regulations.
  • Current Class II medical certification.
  • Must possess flight experience in rotorcraft operations or acceptable equivalence.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Class I law enforcement certification within one year of hire date.
  • Must have knowledge of flight characteristics and systems of aircraft flown, and skill in the operation of rotary-wing aircraft. .
