Job Description

The Chief Pilot reports to the Chief Operating Officer and is in charge of the Beechcraft King Air 350 Aircraft. Maintains a USC Flight Operations office to support transportation requirements of the University of South Carolina. Daily activities include trip scheduling/coordinating, flight planning, flying and all related ground duties. Directly supervises one full-time pilot and any contract pilots used by University Flight Operations. Required to be on call seven days/week.

Flies the Beechcraft King Air 350; a sophisticated twin engine aircraft for the University of South Carolina administration, national and international dignitaries such as business leaders, senators, and ambassadors who visit the University campuses.

Manages the flight operations office and the USC Aircraft to ensure safe, responsive and cost effective support to the University of South Carolina. Coordinates scheduled flights and maintenance activities to ensure the aircraft is safe and available to fly within a minimum of down time. Closely monitors department budget, and the forecasting of maintenance and supply costs. Supervises the cleaning of aircraft, hangar and office spaces.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensed commercial pilot, instrument rating and rating for the category and class of aircraft to be flown. Minimum 3500 hours flying experience, ½ of which must be as Pilot in Command (PIC). Must have FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, multi-engine/instrument rated with a minimum of 3500 hours total, or which half as Pilot in Command (PIC) of which 1500 hours is multi-engine with 1000 hours in multi-engine turboprop and a minimum of 500 hours in King Air 350. Must have completed formal 350 ground and simulator training and hold a type rating in the King Air 350.

Must live within 35 miles of airport (KCUB) and during normal working hours be able to respond and launch USC airplane within 90 mins of initial call. During weekends response time is 2 hours & 30 minutes from initial call.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Must possess knowledge of FAR’s, be able to satisfactorily complete annual professional pilot training, and periodic flight evaluations. Must have the ability to supervise and train flight crew, perform under stress in high-density airspace, high-volume aircraft traffic areas, and inclement weather. Must have the ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing). Must maintain record keeping systems and procedures, develop and examine flight operations and procedures, and formulate policy and develop/implement procedures. Must be familiar with, and able to implement concepts, practices, and procedures related to aviation safety. Must be familiar with basic monthly finance operations, reporting & planning and forecasting. In addition, must be familiar with State of South Carolina Purchasing Card procedures, Request for Proposal (RFP) procedures and procurement. Must be able to pass the University “Conflict of Interest/Outside Employment” screening.
