Physical Therapy Assistant Jobs

Under supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist, the Physical Therapy Assistant administers physical therapy treatments to patients to overcome the effects of physical disabilities, impairments, diseases, aging processes, and to aid in improving, restoring and maintaining the patient to former physical capabilities. Regularly communicates with the physical therapists and other members of the healthcare team throughout all phases of the patient’s therapeutic program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties and responsibilities are performed under the oversight of a licensed Physical Therapist:

• Follows established treatment procedures and observes safety precautions in the application of heat, cold, electromagnetic and electrical modalities, tractions, massage, mobilization and therapeutic exercises for patients with neurological, cardio-pulmonary, vascular, orthopedic, medical, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

• Applies, adjusts and trains patients in the use of assistive devices such as, but not limited to, crutches, canes, walkers, orthotics, prosthetics, wheelchairs and other durable medical equipment.

• As requested by the supervising physical therapist, assist in patient/family education regarding issues of physical therapy to include, but not limited to, their understanding of their diagnosis, functional limitations, treatment regimens, safety issues regarding treatment and performance of treatment activities in the hospital as well as at home.

• Assists the physical therapist in evaluation, testing, and complex procedures.

• Executes written documentation in a timely manner, countersigned by mentoring therapist.

• Attends departmental meetings and rounds as instructed.

• Maintains an appropriate quantity of supplies and informs therapist as to supplies or equipment needs.

• Participates in planning, organization and conducting of student training programs and departmental in-service as needed.

• Remains informed of current trends in field by reviewing literature and attending conferences or training programs in order to meet CME requirements.

• As requested by their supervising therapist, provides direction to rehabilitation aides, students and volunteers in their respective assigned areas.

• Cleans and repairs equipment as required.

Job Requirements:

• Completion of NYS-approved program for training of physical therapy assistants

• Valid New York State Physical Therapy Assistant license

• 1-2 years of experience with skilled treatment and ability to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.

• Registration/certification with NYS as a Physical Therapy Assistant is required.

• Basic computer skills required for necessary daily patient documentation in the EMR

• Effective interpersonal skills

• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to communicate effectively with other members of the healthcare team, families, patients and students and complete documentation in the EMR indicating medical necessity for ongoing treatment.

• Current BCLS certification

Salary Range: $30.350/hr -$34.506/hr
