Position Summary
The SMA research portfolio continues to expand and physical therapists play a key role as clinical evaluators in all clinical trials. We currently have an experienced physical therapist and occupational therapist involved in many active SMA studies. An additional physical therapist is needed to expand the clinical trial efforts as well as other important research related initiatives such as outcome measure and biomarker development.
We are currently seeking a physical therapist for a pediatric neuromuscular clinical research center at Columbia University. The therapist will provide clinical physical therapy evaluations and treatment and will work on clinical research studies. The candidate should be highly motivated, interested in pediatric neuromuscular disease, have excellent clinical skills and an interest in academic research. We are looking for someone who can establish good rapport with children and bring creativity to treatments. The candidate should have good assessment skills and be well versed in use of evidence based practice. Good writing and communication skills are a must. Computer skills are required including proficiency with MS-Word, MS-Excel, Outlook, and MS-Powerpoint. This position requires a special individual who can perform well in both clinical practice and an academic research environment.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate comprehensive multi-disciplinary care for patients with neuromuscular disease.
  • Communicate with research teams at Columbia University and other institutions.
  • Work closely with regional vendors to provide prescribe and provide custom equipment.
  • Perform functional and impairment based evaluations.
  • Data collection and entry, scheduling and preparation for study visits.
  • Assist in writing protocols.
  • Assist patients in their home care and equipment needs.
  • Serve as a community mentor in educating clinicians on care consideration guidelines for neuromuscular diseases.
  • Work with physicians to assess muscle strength and motor function as part of clinical evaluations.
  • Work on a collaborative multidisciplinary team with mentorship available.
  • Assist in maintaining research files and interacting with monitors.
  • Monitoring adherence to regulatory requirements and good clinical practice.
  • Evaluate patients for rehabilitation, adaptive, and durable medical equipment needs and make recommendations for follow-up and community care.
  • Perform clinical evaluations of the pediatric neuromuscular population seen in our clinic.
  • Evaluate, prescribe, and measure patients for appropriate equipment.
  • Responsible for submitting for funding for necessary equipment from third party payers writing detailed letters of medical necessity and appeals as needed.
  • Manage care for medically complex and medically fragile infants, children and adults.
  • Clinical trial evaluation, spirometry testing, motor function testing, quantitative muscle testing and other clinical and research evaluations of neuromuscular patients.
  • Assist the investigators in design, planning and implementation of new research projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Master's degree in Physical Therapy, plus three years of related experience.
NYS License as a Physical Therapist
Must successfully complete systems training requirements
Preferred Qualifications
At least one year of pediatric and juvenile work experience.
Ability to work in teams, flexibility and a positive attitude.
Experience with neuromuscular disease--SMA helpful but not required.
