Job Description
Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing personnel investigative work relating to Fire Fighter entrance processes including work history, character and credentials of applicants into the SA Fire Department. Exercises no supervision.
Work Location
Public Safety Headquarters, 315 S. Santa Rosa, Suite 2000
Work Hours
7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Essential Job Functions

  • Completes summaries of investigations for City Manager review and approval.
  • Conducts workshops for Candidate Physical Assessment Testing and proctors Ergometrics evaluations.
  • Investigates all applicants under employment consideration to determine and verify past work history, character, and work qualifications.
  • Meets with applicants to discuss Personal History Statements.
  • Conducts criminal investigation and driving records compliance verifications through the Texas Criminal Investigations Center and Federal Bureau Investigations.
  • Submits written reports of all investigation findings to appropriate authority and prepares necessary correspondence, as required by the particulars of the investigation.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
  • Completes disqualification letters and compiles packets when applicants appeal to Fire Fighter' and Police Civil Service Commission.

Job Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience in investigatory work, preferably personnel investigations.
  • This position requires a valid Class “C” Driver’s License OR valid driver’s license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Use of your own vehicle may at times be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required.
  • Two years of college from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework in Human Resources, investigations, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of personnel investigation techniques and methodologies.
  • Experience in applying and interpreting employment law, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act, Equal Employment Opportunity, and the American with Disabilities Act
  • Polygraph examination experience.
  • Experience in performing personnel investigations.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Ability to conduct investigations in a tactful manner to obtain pertinent information.
  • Ability to prepare completed and accurate reports.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Working conditions are in an office environment.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of personnel investigations.
  • Ability to understand and ensure compliance with Administrative Directives, City policies and procedures, and Fire Fighters' and Police Officers' Civil Service Commission Rules.
  • Ability to become familiar with city streets and business locations.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
