The Center for Brooklyn History (CBH) Retail Shop at Brooklyn Public Library seeks a temporary part-time Retail Associate with excellent customer service and social confidence to assist our customers with purchasing decisions, processing daily transactions, and maintaining a clean and visually appealing salesfloor. The retail associate's responsibilities include assisting customers with daily transactions questions, complaints, returns, arranging merchandise on shelves and in displays, and opening and closing the register daily.
CBH is a museum, research library, and community hub dedicated to public history. Formerly known as the Brooklyn Historical Society, CBH became part of Brooklyn Public Library in 2020 and is now free and accessible to all. The Shop @ CBH will support author talks, cultural programs, education programming, and build upon CBH’s extensive local history collection with related books and offerings. Offerings at the store should consider the library’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as its goal of democratizing the Center for Brooklyn History’s archive and its building by appealing to audiences across Brooklyn.
- Assist with facilitating retail purchases and answering questions about merchandise based on training provided by the Retail Manager
- Setting and attaining sales goals
- Welcoming and engaging with customers as they enter the store area
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Processes returns and exchanges
- Cleaning and restocking the store throughout the day, before opening and at closing
- Giving customers information about sale and promotions
- Alerts Retail Manager of any potential security issues
- Recommending the best products to customers
- Retrieves merchandise from sales floor, stock room, or other inventory locations; places special orders
- Assist with inventory, including receiving and stocking merchandise
- Assessing customers' needs and suggesting solutions to any merchandise issues
- Assist with opening and closing the SHOP
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Computer literate including Microsoft Office, Excel and capable of operating inventory POS system
- Knowledge of and enthusiasm for Brooklyn history a plus
- Must be creative, adaptable, and have flexible mindset
- Experience managing inventory
- Confidence recommending merchandise to customers
- Ability to anticipate customer's needs
- Committed to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
- Extensive knowledge of the merchandise sold
- Excellent active listening skills
- Must be responsible, dependable, and punctual
- Excellent sales and customer service skills
- Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED, some college preferred
- Previous retail experience preferred
