Job Description

Salary Range: $16.00 - $21.26 Hourly

Job Summary :

The City’s internship program provides hands-on experience for students exploring career opportunities in government service and related fields.

Community Development Planning currently has one part-time, seasonal internship position to assist with long-range planning tasks. The position runs from August through December 2023 for 10-20 hours per week during normal working hours (8a-5p, Monday through Friday). This is a paid internship designed for a student in Urban Planning or a planning-related field including but not limited to: Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, or Pre-law.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills :

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Current college student in Urban Planning or planning-related field including but not limited to Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, or Pre-Law.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Good customer service and public contact skills.
  • High school diploma.
  • Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with computer systems such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to use judgment in evaluating conditions and attributes of land, infrastructure, improvements, and opportunities.
  • Requires travel throughout the City to conduct surveys.
  • Survey work, including completing inventory forms.
  • Assisting with the design of future studies.
  • Assisting with reviews of land use proposals.
  • Gathering and synthesizing public input.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Preparing written and verbal reports for staff, appointed and elected officials.
  • Participating in design charettes.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and related equipment.
  • Hearing and speech enough to communicate to with the public, as well as staff and appointed and elected officials, etc.
  • Time will be spent partially in an office with occasional field work in variable weather conditions necessary.
  • Mobility enough to access sites in urban, rural, or rough terrain such as farm/fields/ditch banks.
