Job Summary
The Ore Dock Electrician is responsible for repairing and installing electrical systems, services, and equipment for the Ore Docks. Additionally, the incumbent maintains and provides safe conditions and operation of electrical equipment and fixtures as well as systems in the docks.
Major Responsibilities
- Ensure a safe working environment by following CN’s safety policies and procedures
- Use hand tools, power tools, and appliances needed for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical circuits, related fixtures, and hardware
- Complete electrical work order requests through the work order system
- Measure, cut, thread, bend, assemble, and install conduits
- Troubleshoot electrical malfunctions and perform required repairs
- Test circuits and equipment using voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter, ohmmeter, and other test equipment
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring systems, switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes, as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures
- Inspect, maintain, repair, and test a variety of electrical equipment, circuitry, and fixtures
- Insert, splice HV cables and connect wires to fixtures, outlets, switches, receptacles, and power source
Working Conditions
- The role is primarily performed in a shop environment but may occasionally require work outdoors in various types of weather conditions
- The role is occasionally performed in confined spaces at elevated heights
- Travel to assigned work locations or other destinations (company vehicle provided)
- The incumbent will often bend, squat, kneel, lift, twist, climb, reach, stand, and walk throughout shift
- The role is required to wear proper safety attire
- Use of hands for repetitive pushing, pulling, and single grasp motions
- Maintain work schedule according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which includes irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays
Requirements
- Basic computer knowledge
- Collaborates with others and shares information
- Must successfully complete CNs training courses upon hire
- *Electrical Journeyman License preferred, but not required
- Identifies potential safety and security risks
- Proven ability to perform maintenance and diagnostic services on equipment malfunctions, and complete repairs when required
- Able to interpret electrical schematics, apply building plans and perform installation from blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings
- High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
- Knowledge of local and State Electrical Code
- Knowledge of safety procedures (e.g. in proximity of high voltage distribution systems and power distribution in equipment facilities)
- Good English communication skills (written, oral, reading, comprehension)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Experience in troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and installing industrial wiring
- Knowledge of electrical systems for emergency power systems (e.g. emergency generators or transfer switches and knowledge of UPS systems’ operations sequences)
- Proven ability to complete the installation, modification and repair of various electrical systems, circuits, equipment, and controls
Training
The incumbent receives on the-job training, which includes new employee safety training, hands-on training to learn how to operate the various systems at the docks, and ongoing annual safety training.
This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
