SUMMARY: SightMD is looking for career minded individuals to be at the heart of that vision and assist in the daily patient care and flow of clinic activities. As the Ophthalmic Technician I, you will play a vital role as an assistant to our physicians. Although prior medical experience is preferred, especially in the eye care field, we will provide you with our extensive and thorough training program even if you have nothing more than a great desire to enter the medical field for the first time.


Your schedule will vary, dependent on the operational hours of the office you are assigned to. You must have the flexibility to work within these hours of operation, including occasional weekends, early mornings, or late evenings as needed.


Please note you may be required to travel to other different office locations (Southold, Southampton & Hampton Bays)


Job Duties & Essential Functions


  • Maintain operating integrity of office equipment, troubleshooting and performing preventive maintenance as necessary
  • Acquaint yourself with all new and established patients, providing plan and setting expectations for their visit
  • Advise patients as to who will see them following work up and testing, making them comfortable during wait times
  • Maintain a smooth and seamless flow of patients to examination rooms
  • Renew prescription eye drops as directed by physician
  • Document all history and testing information accurately and consistently
  • Verify patients current eye prescription information
  • Respond to patients, pharmacies, and other medical parties in a timely manner
  • Greet and guide patients to examination rooms
  • Actively participate in continuing education by attending relevant educational classes/webinars and staying abreast of all industry best practices
  • Dilate patients’ eyes using eye drops if needed for further testing
  • Other duties as assigned or directed by your Supervisor
  • Obtain patient medical history to include chief complaint or reason for visit, family medical history, history of any allergies and list of current medications
  • Secure patient information and maintain patient confidentiality by completing and safeguarding medical records and by maintaining accuracy of diagnostic and procedure coding
  • Perform basic eye tests prior to physician exam and ensure patient understands what is being performed and how they will be affected during the tests; Tests include, but are not limited to - basic vision (wall chart), depth perception, color blindness, eye pressure, topography, autorefraction/refraction, visual field, tear lab
  • Manage inventory supply needs for the office and verify receipt of goods

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Comfortable working in a medical environment as well as a fast-paced environment
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Embody a welcoming/friendly demeanor
  • Open availability to work, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends when needed
  • Computer literacy
  • Strong customer service background


Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience as a medical assistant or in medical environment, understanding of medical terminology, and COA certification preferred but not required
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus


Physical Demands

The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position is active and requires the employee to constantly move about in the office to assist patients, staff and medical providers.
