Attends CME courses to maintain and enhance ophthalmic technician skills.

Experience in ophthalmology or an ophthalmic practice.

Obtains a thorough medical history from the patient

Assesses patient's visual acuity, both near and far vision.

Performs manual lensometry on patient's glasses.

Assesses patient's refractive error by performing a manifest refraction.

Explain treatment procedures and provide approved educational information to patients and their families

Manage Provider schedule(s) in the EHR system, which includes scheduling patients for appointments, and in-office procedures

Obtain and document past medical and surgical histories, chief complaint, history of present illness (HPI), and vital signs

Reconcile and document patient medications and allergies in the EHR system

Assist the Provider with patient examination, treatment, and in-office procedures as needed

Prepare and administer medications as directed by the Provider

Record pertinent clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements, professional standards and hospital policies.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred

1+ year of clinical experience in a patient care setting is beneficial

Fully competent in the Ophthalmic Technician role in the assigned specialty clinic.

The Ophthalmology Technician provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.

Triage phone calls, patient walk-ins and other patient related issues as they arise.

Communication – Ability to communicate effectively with others using good listening skills.

Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.

Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.

Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history.

Acts as scribe while physician examines patient entering data into electronic medical records.

Administers diagnostic tests including but not limited to OCT, automated visual fields, photography, pachymetry, biometry

Strong written & verbal skills for patient history assessment, medical record documentation & patient/family education

Knowledge of & skill at providing basic CPR required

Obtains patient history information: conducts patient education; records appropriate progress information, reports abnormal findings to physician

Two (2) years practical experience as Ophthalmic Medical Assistant OR one (1) year training/practical experience as an Ophthalmic Technician

General knowledge of ophthalmic diseases, symptoms, diagnosis & treatment in order to carry out function noted above

Performance of fluorescein angiography (FA)

Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat professional appearance.

Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: typing, information security, electronic medical documentation, hand held scanning and email.

Performs as necessary the readying of patient examination rooms.

Maintains minor procedure and laser rooms including ordering of supplies.

Escorts patients to examination rooms, performs all ophthalmic pre-testing and assists with examinations and procedures.

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

Previous customer service experience in a healthcare setting is desired.

What Skills Would You Master During Training?

You will prepare and update patient records, prepare requisitions for patient testing, and assist in reviewing charts and schedules for patients.

You will calibrate, clean and maintain ophthalmic equipment and instruments for the exam and treatment rooms

You will triage patient phone calls, assist patients into and out of examining rooms, and participate in clinical procedures

Completes CME requirements to maintain certification through JCAHPO.

Performs procedures with accuracy and efficiency, using current skills and knowledge of equipment.

BASIC SKILLS including Visual Acuity testing, Color Vision testing, Lensometry, Amsler Grid, Evaluation of Pupils, Estimation of Anterior Chamber Depth

OCULARY PHARMACOLOGY knowledge and understands medications used in ophthalmology

GENERAL MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE including but not limited to; glucometer testing, blood pressure testing and administration of oxygen

Obtains certification in one research study.

Basic exam skills, such as testing visual acuity, eye pressures, checking pupils, extraocular muscles movements, and refraction

Experience as an ophthalmic tech

Current COA or COT certification

Computer literacy and organizational skills

Experience with electronic medical records

Working knowledge of eye terminology, eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications

Current Ophthalmic Technician Certification preferred, plus specialized certifications as needed.

Variable shift 8a-6p Some Saturdays 8-2p

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases, ocular emergencies.

Knowledge of oral medications and invasive techniques.

Skill in data analysis and interpretation.

Initial certification is the responsibility of the employee. Renewal certification classes/cost provided by OHSU if job required.

COA or COT certification preferred. Maintenance of JCAHPO certification preferred.

Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and related computer applications.

Data entry for research visits in EDC and/or EMR platforms.

Enter data in EDC based on sponsor requirements.

Attend CME courses to maintain and enhance ophthalmic technician skills.

Assist Ophthalmic Medical Personnel students with basic skills as assigned.

Successful completion of Michigan Medicine?s 12-week training program is required or some experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required.

Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records and medical terminology is desirable.

Minimum of 1 - 5 years? experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or 1 - 5 years? experience in an ophthalmic practice.

Certification is required to be obtained within one year
