Job Description

King County Library System (KCLS) is seeking a resilient and adaptable individual who wishes to serve as an Operations Manager (OM) in the Kent community.



The ideal candidate will be able to model and champion excellent customer service, support Intellectual Freedom, work with diverse populations in a service role, and exhibit the ability to work directly with the public in sometimes challenging situations. The Operations Manager will focus on providing service at the Kent Library but will also provide support to Cedar Region staff and act as a member of the library management team serving Fairwood, Kent Panther Lake, Maple Valley, and Southcenter.




About the Opportunity:

The Operations Manager is principally responsible for routine operations in an assigned facility. This position also directs the work of staff and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks related to library operations, including but not limited to scheduling, payroll, patron service, patron behavior management, and facilities management. The Operations Manager coordinates with the Regional Manager, Assistant Operations Manager and Librarian and Information Services Managers to ensure the most efficient use of staff, resources and the successful completion of shared managerial level assignments. The Operations Manager also provides managerial support and supervision to ensure effective and efficient operations in other locations in the Region and will also support the delivery of library services consistent with KCLS mission, vision, standards, and policy directives.



The successful candidate will be able to assess and analyze situations and problems, logically find solutions, and successfully integrate and manage multiple systems and priorities to produce efficient library operations.

Examples of Duties


Essential Duties/Major Responsibilities:

Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents, however, and do not include all specific tasks an incumbent may be expected to perform.


1. Coordinates daily operations of assigned functions including communicating and implementing policies, procedures, services and projects.

2. Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches and disciplines direct reports

3. Serves as a person with primary responsibility for safe and efficient daily operations in an assigned facility.

4. Communicates and coordinates daily circulation operations activities. Maintains work schedules to meet facility service needs.

5. Participates with the Circulation Coordinator in developing, recommending and implementing policies and procedures for circulation and backroom operations. Coordinates communication and ensures that the work of circulation staff and implementation of KCLS policies, procedures, services and projects are consistent across the region.

6. Tracks and monitors assigned budget and produces required reports for assigned facility and functions. Reviews and approves Monthly Revenue Report.

7. Participates in and contributes to overall management of region. Member of the Region Management Team. Fosters the development of a cooperative work environment.

8. Provides training for non-direct reports.

9. Manages and approves payroll time entries and leave requests.

10. Resolves staff and patron incidents, problems, concerns and conflicts ensuring that Rules of Conduct are followed or redirects to appropriate source. Resolves and refers other operations issues.

11. Promotes, educates and supports Intellectual Freedom principles with staff and patrons. Resolves related concerns or redirects to appropriate source.




Secondary Duties:


1. Performs direct reports' work, as needed.

2. Participates in activities such as committee work, training, staff meetings, etc.

3. Engages with the community and special population groups, as assigned.

4. Performs other related duties, as assigned.




Desired Minimum Qualification


Education and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential duties of the position is:


· Graduation from an accredited four-year college, plus three years of job-related, library experience and training.

· Four years experience in customer service, including decision making, problem solving and conflict resolution may substitute for up to two years of the required education.

· Or other combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification.

· Some supervisory and budget experience or training preferred.




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid Washington State Driver's License.
