Job Description

Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Enteral Feeding Program - Pediatric Gastroenterology

      Position Description:

      Department Position Purpose

      The (APP/PA) works as a member of the Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition team in collaboration with the Enteral Feeding program to provide a range of consultative services, case management and coordination of care for pediatric patients with gastrointestinal disorders, including feeding, enteral nutrition, and gastrostomy patient care.

      The APP/PA will have a strong foundation in evidenced based practice and ensures an environment of safe quality care.


      Advanced Practice Nurse

      Provides specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/CW/CSG policies and procedures.


      Physician Assistant

      Provides specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/CW/CSG policies and procedures.
      Core Responsibilities

      • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
      • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
      • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
      • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
      • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
      • Perform other duties as assigned.
      • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
      • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
      • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
      • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.


      Department Specific Responsibilities

      • Maintains required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
      • Assist in the evaluation and selection of specific therapies that will benefit the patient’s clinical status. Make independent judgments and prescribe changes in treatment in consultation with physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team. Prescribe medications for appropriate management of diseases and conditions.
      • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and admission and discharge orders as appropriate
      • Participates in department, division, and program specific meetings.
      • Maintain communication with patients’ referring physicians and act as the liaison between patients, families, and other health care team members.
      • Collaborates in comprehensive patient management including but not limited to obtaining complete medical histories, performing physical exams, ordering laboratory tests, and coordinating specialty consultative care for patients. Order and interpret screening and diagnostic tests and appropriately communicate and document information.
      • Assure the performance of necessary diagnostic studies throughout the patients’ medical evaluation based on symptomatology and evidence based practices.
      • Maintain the responsibility of patient and family education associated with pediatric patients with gastrointestinal disorders, including feeding, enteral nutrition, and gastrostomy patient care by developing and implementing formal teaching plan content.
      • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

      Preferred Schedule:
      Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours, 7:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, with evening/weekend hours as needed


      Position Requirements:
      Minimum Education:


      Advanced Practice Nurse

      Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing


      Physician Assistant

      Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies


      Certifications / Licenses
      (Must be current and maintained)


      Advanced Practice Nurse

      • Wisconsin RN license
      • Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber License
      • Certification as Advance Practice Nurse

      Physician Assistant

      • Certification by NCCPA
      • Wisconsin PA license
      Prior Experience
      • Zero years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner required
      • 2-5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse strongly preferred
