GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Nursing Coordinator is accountable for facilitating excellence in patient care delivery, providing operating efficiencies and insuring compliance with hospital and regulatory policies and practices. This role is a vital leadership role within the Dermatology Service. Drawing on a broad understanding of clinical and hospital practices and policies and displaying a high degree of initiative and independent judgment, the Nursing Coordinator under the direction of the Nurse Manager will continually assess and assist in a wide range of clinical and programmatic issues including personnel, long-range planning, practice growth and hospital relations.
The Dermatology Laser & Cosmetic Center treats patients seeking laser and other cosmetic services. A majority of these services are not covered by health insurance. In addition to cosmetic patients there are a smaller number of patients being seen for medically necessary services. There are 20 lasers available to treat patients. There are 7 attending physicians, 2 LPNs, 1 medical assistant and 3.3 FTE patient service coordinators. Dermatology residents rotate though the center during their training. FY21 volume was ~8,600 patient visits. The Nursing Coordinator spends time both assisting in operations of the unit as well as functioning as an RN assisting physicians with patient sessions.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Care Management
- Provides and maintains a climate in which effective patient focused care is assured throughout the patient’s visit.
- Responsible for expertise in cosmetic dermatology care and preserving the integrity of the provider/patient relationship.
- Responsible for excellence in patient focused care delivery including implementing and evaluating approved policies and procedures necessary for the delivery of such care; evaluating customer satisfaction and recommending and integrating changes as appropriate.
- Collaborates with physicians, clinical staff, other health care professionals and support personnel to determine and evaluate the delivery of outpatient care; address and solve unit care issues.
- Actively participates in department and hospital committees.
Personnel Management
- Assist the Nurse Manager in determining staffing patterns and required personnel complements to meet the needs of the patient population.
- Promotes the development of self-managed teams engaging unit-based staff in the decision making process as needed.
- Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, will implement delegation of responsibilities and authority to appropriate staff and develops systems for effective follow up.
- Along with the Nurse manager, plans, directs, and participates in regularly scheduled meetings to share information and problem solve with unit personnel.
- Provides opportunities for staff to participate in decisions related to the unit/service/department.
- Collaborates with service and other educational resources to facilitate learning experiences for staff.
- Aids Nurse Manager with updating job descriptions for all support staff annually.
- Assists the Nurse Manager with providing direction to nursing support staff (nurses, medical assistants) and administrative staff.
- Working under the direction of the Ambulatory Nurse Manager assists with interviews, hires, and has input on evaluations for support staff including LPN’s, medical assistants and Patient Service Coordinators for Dermatology Laser & Cosmetics.
Administration/Business
- Promotes, develops and evaluates various processes and systems along with identifying, communicating, and resolving systems issues.
- Works with Professional Billing Office to resolve patient billing concerns.
- Maintains the highest quality of work while continually measuring outcomes to ensure the most effective and efficient processes.
- Ensures effective management of resources oversees the management of inventory levels
- Orders equipment as needed for patient care and ensures a safe and secure storage unit for medical supplies.
- Proactively seeks and acts upon patient, families and staff feedback and initiates appropriate action.
- Prepare monthly call schedule for attending physicians.
- Accountable for hospital and regulatory standards.
- Maintains the provider clinic cancelations and tardiness tracking.
Operations Management
- Organizes and communicates the necessary equipment for laser installation such as outlets, jacks or ports.
- Interprets and enforces with staff on the unit the appropriate use of equipment, supplies, and physical facilities.
- Coordinates the annual maintenance of laser equipment.
- Maintains the safe and effective use of all lasers in the unit to provide a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Coordinates the in-service training sessions of new services for department.
- Maintains a safe environment for patient/staff while executing daily operational activities necessary for effective dermatology practice functioning.
- Works with physicians to continually update the MGH approved Laser web site.
- With the Nurse Manager review Quality and Safety data.
- Directs day-to-day activities of all support staff.
- Prepares monthly schedule for Surgical Day Care Unit (SDCU) patients. Ensures that all supplies are available to physicians working in the SDCU. Coordinate with OR administration to ensure smooth OR sessions and necessary equipment is onsite for patient care.
- Responsible for obtaining all prior authorization required for patient medications.
- High level oversight of the master schedules to ensure proper scheduling of sessions and patient flow.
- Working with the Nurse Manager, participates in planning current and long-term projects to improve the operation of the Dermatology Laser Unit.
Collaboration
- Offers assistance that support the team and ensures that patient needs are not compromised.
- Exhibits diplomacy and communicates with others in a manner that demonstrates respect, professionalism and a commitment to the team.
- Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to troubleshoot vendor disputes.

- Directly supports the patient clinical workflow within a busy specialty cosmetic outpatient clinic Monday – Friday.

EDUCATION
Minimum Required:
Some college or Associate’s Degree

Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training:
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing required, Bachelor's of Science in Nursing strongly preferred.
- Graduated from an accredited Nursing Program required.
Equivalent Experience – please document if educational requirements can be met through equivalent experience: N/A
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a LPN.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in leadership preferred.
- Experience in Laser and Cosmetics strongly preferred.
