Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides care for employees of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System who are injured during the course of their work duties. The APP functions as a member of the Employee Health Services and Human Resources team to promote health and prevent injuries/illness in the healthcare environment, partnering to improve health of employees and to reduce the number of work-related health risks.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • . Observes current business practices related to the handling of hazardous materials or maintaining health and safety standards. Makes recommendations to improve the safety of the workplace and standard operating procedures. Actively seeks opportunities for continued education and professional growth necessary to maintain licensure and further develop expertise in occupational health.
  • Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, ensuring personal safety and safety of coworkers. Reports all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
  • Consults with physician Medical Director of Employee Health Services and/or refers employees for physician evaluation appropriately as needed.
  • Provides information, guidance, education, and leadership regarding occupational health issues to the Employee Health Services and Human Resources team.
  • Assesses employee's health status by obtaining a complete health history and appropriate physical examination.
  • Evaluates and analyzes the employee’s response to therapeutic interventions and alters the plan of care as needed. Consults with collaborating physician and refers for physician evaluation appropriately.
  • Works under the direction of and in collaboration with the physician Medical Director of Employee Health Services.
  • In collaboration with Team Lead and Medical Director, reviews, modifies and develops policies and procedures specific to Employee Health Services.
  • Provides evaluation, orders laboratory/diagnostic tests, diagnoses medical conditions, renders treatment, write prescriptions, makes referrals for physical/occupational therapy, and/or seeks specialist evaluation of work-related conditions experienced by employees, managing their on-going care as needed.
  • Specifies necessary work restrictions when work-related conditions or personal medical conditions would prevent an employee from safely fulfilling all of their essential job duties.
  • Reviews, modifies, and/or develops policies and procedures specific to Employee Health Services in collaboration with nurse Team Lead and physician Medical Director.
  • Promotes health and well-being to colleagues.
  • Under the supervision of a physician manages and provides care for injured employees.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, colleagues, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel and in appropriately private places.
  • Behaves in accordance with the Code of Conduct, Service Excellence Standards, and the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMH.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
  • Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Employee Health physician, diagnoses medical conditions and plans and orders consultations, therapies and interventions. These include, but are not limited to, medications, laboratory/diagnostic tests, physical/occupational therapy and referrals for specialty care and treatments.
  • Documents all assessment data, prescriptions, and referrals in the Employee Health record.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to provide care to patients, employees and families, communicate complex concepts to all levels of personnel and to collaborate effectively with other health care team members. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when evaluating patient/employee care. Advanced analytical skills to assist in developing and implementing delivery of care systems, policies and procedures, and educational programs. Ability to develop and implement methods of care and to research relevant topics as needed.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE

Education:

For Physician Assistants: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant training program.

For Nurse Practitioners: Master’s Degree in clinical nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program with emphasis in occupational health.

Experience:

Two to three years of related experience in occupational health.

Licensure and Certification:

For Physician Assistants: Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and current license from the State of Michigan.

Current Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner license in the State of Michigan.

Certification in Occupational Health Nursing through the American Board of Occupational Health Nurses preferred, must be received within two years.
