Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland’s Edge Networking Team is responsible for monitoring, managing and ensuring high availability of the University’s edge network infrastructure in a 24×7×365 environment. The Network Edge Team triages incoming incidents from the service desk via the ServiceNow ticketing system, messaging systems (email, Webex), phones and tools, and resolves the issue to restore operational state.
This Mid level network engineer position fulfills network resource and service requests, supports the campus community with network related issues, and provides on-site customer support. This position is the lead in day to day operations within the Edge Networking Team, serving as the next point of escalation for junior network engineers. This engineer will review all current incidents and promptly report issues to management, and follow escalation procedures for both internal and vendor resolution support.
  • This position requires the mentoring of the Network Edge junior network engineers and students within the Division of Information Technology (DIT). This involves onboarding, training, and review of work tasks.
  • Documentation is a critical component of this position. Operations, duty and audit reports and documentation are essential.
  • This position requires on-call weekend or overnight hours for problem resolution or maintenance in support of the University’s main campus and satellite offices.
  • This position requires an understanding of network security and may require the development and deployment of network security services.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree with preferred emphasis in Computer Science, Information Systems, Math or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
  • Experience with Cisco and Palo Alto firewalls and VPNs.
  • Experience using enterprise Network Management Systems applications (Paessler PRTG, Broadcom Spectrum, Cisco Prime, SolarWinds, etc.).
  • At least 5 years of network operations or IT service desk experience working in an enterprise environment with routers, access switches, firewalls, and VPNs.
  • Experience with network services tools (Infoblox, BlueCat, etc.).


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Technical knowledge of and experience working with current hardware including: Cisco and Aruba routers and switches
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Well-developed organizational skills and keen attention to detail.

Conditions of Employment:
Must possess and maintain a noncommercial Driver’s License or equivalent valid in the State of Maryland with fewer than six (6) points.

  • Experience with higher education networks.
  • 3 years of mid-level working experience in a network operations support role.
  • Monitoring tools including Cisco, Aruba, Paessler, SolarWinds.
  • Technical knowledge of and experience working with current hardware including: Infoblox DNS, DHCP, IPAM (DDI).
