Job Description

Asian American Futures (AAF) invests in emerging grassroots organizations, builds narrative power, and activates new voices to shape a powerful Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) majority rooted in solidarity, belonging and self-determination. We are driven by our mission, which is to ensure Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are Seen, Heard, Empowered, and United.

We are seeking a full-time Program Coordinator to join our team to support AAF's narrative strategy initiatives and programs. The ideal candidate will be a motivated and mission-driven individual who has past experience working on experimental new initiatives; has deep knowledge of Millennial and/or GenZ AAPI audiences; and has some knowledge of the AAPI arts, culture and/or creator spaces. This role will predominantly support the Narrative Strategist to launch experiments and narrative programs that advance our aspirational narratives and engage stretch audiences who may not yet be involved in progressive, AAPI or multiracial spaces.

In 2022, our team conductedgroundbreaking audience researchto identify opportunities to build AAPI narrative power and define key audiences within Millennial and GenZ AAPIs. We are now focused on launching experiments and new initiatives to reach these audiences and advance our aspirational narratives, starting with affirmative action.

These narratives are:

  • Pride: AANHPIs are not a monolith. We can be proud of our diversity in language, culture, ethnicity and experience. How we unite and build strength in numbers may depend on the issue at hand.
  • Self-Determination: AANHPI communities deserve to govern and define themselves beyond war, imperialism & violence.
  • Belonging: AANHPIs deserve to be included, with intersectionality in mind, in politics, pop culture, news, social justice & more.
  • Interdependence: AANHPIs look out for each other. We work to ensure people and the environment are safe, healthy and thriving.
  • Solidarity: AANHPIs can connect to the struggles and experiences of people within and outside our communities. We are stronger and more powerful when we act in solidarity with others.

Responsibilities

Innovation:Work with the Narrative Strategist to launch experiments that reach key audiences and shape conversations about important issues affecting AAPI communities. This could include:

  • Creating content prototypes across multiple media to circulate new ideas, from tiktok videos to op-ed pitches
  • Developing creative briefs and managing creators for an issue campaign
  • Generating ideas and providing support for creative interventions to reach stretch audiences, from campaigns to events to exhibits
  • Writing, testing and iterating to find the best messaging on an issue or topic

Program support:

  • Assist with scheduling, recruitment and coordination for our NHPI narrative and audience research
  • Assist with communications materials for fundraising, events, grantee recruitment and more
  • Assist with zoom-based webinars, trainings, briefings and toolkits to share narrative learnings and best practices with grassroots AAPI organizations
  • Support participants in the Catalyst Lab, a policy and narrative lab for grassroots AAPI organizations, with their policy campaigns, as-needed
  • Coordinate with partners, consultants and internal teammates to schedule meetings, share follow-ups and ensure project deadlines are met
  • Contribute to program strategy development

Organizational development:Pitch-in where needed to help an early-stage startup organization meet its goals. Contribute to a positive work environment in accordance with the values of Asian American Futures.

Qualifications

  • 1-4 years of professional experience, preferably working on experimental, new initiatives
  • Past experience (paid or volunteer) in the AAPI space is helpful, but not required
  • Curious and open mindset
  • Experience supporting content creation and/or a creative practice, e.g. tiktoks, youtube videos, instagram posts, journalism, producing exhibits, creating arts installations, launching comms campaigns, or other projects
  • Acts with integrity, kindness, and dedication with an openness to feedback
  • Ability to manage-up and stay motivated in a remote work environment
  • Some knowledge of the AAPI arts, culture or creator spaces
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to juggle various priorities and projects
  • Innovative thinker willing to take risks and work in a highly collaborative team
  • Deep knowledge of Millennial or GenZ AAPI audiences
  • Ready to work in a fast-paced, startup environment
  • Self starter with strong follow through
