Summary
The primary purpose of the Music Therapist position is to provide music therapy to patients and caregivers in individual, group, inpatient, and outpatient settings in a safe and evidence-based manner with complete adherence to the policies, procedures, and mission of the Integrative Medicine Center and MD Anderson.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Clinical Designs and provides creative, evidence-based music therapy services which reflect current best practice and treatment protocols for the discipline. Provides music therapy services in outpatient, inpatient, and group settings. Accurately verifies the physician's orders for music therapy. Reviews chart for contraindications/precautions for treatment and, if present, reports to MD/APP/RN. Assesses or evaluates the patient prior to and throughout the duration of music therapy services through review of the medical record and patient interview. Administers and reviews patient questionnaires as part of routine assessment. Observes/assesses patient for any unexpected and/or undesirable physical/emotional reactions, suspends treatment, provides appropriate intervention, and then reports them to MD/ APP/RN as indicated. Prepares written goals and objectives based upon assessment or evaluation results, prognosis and information obtained from other disciplines. Documents treatment and clinical progress in medical record according to institutional guidelines. Ensures a safe environment, maintains equipment and supplies in a clean, operable and safe manner, and follows institution infection control policies. Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies regarding patient confidentiality. Participates in inpatient rounding and interdisciplinary team meetings. May be asked to analyze and develop current Music Therapy program. Consults and collaborates with IMC Health Psychologist regarding content of services.
Research-related activities Is aware of current research regarding Music Therapy. May participate in research studies involving Music Therapy and oncology patients. May be asked to develop guidelines/algorithms/group classes based on relevant research.
Education Educates patients on music therapy. May be asked to present on Music Therapy to staff members or those in the community. May participate in outreach programs, conferences, retreats, special events and other activities as part of program offerings.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy from a National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited university.
Preferred Education: Master's Level Degree
Certification
Board Certified Music Therapist.
Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Preferred Certification: Master's degree in Music Therapy from a university approved by the American Music Therapy Association.
Experience: One year of experience as a Board Certified Music Therapist in a community setting.
Preferred Experience: 2 years experience working as a Board Certified Music Therapist in a Medical, Rehabilitation, Palliative Care, or Integrative Medicine Setting. Experience with oncology patients of all ages.
