Job Description
Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. The mission of the National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) is to save species by using cutting-edge science, sharing knowledge and providing inspirational experiences for our guests. Responsibilities The Biologist (Assistant Elephant Curator) position is located in the Animal Care Sciences, Elephant Trails Unit of the National Zoological Park (NZP) in Washington, DC. The Elephant Manager/ Assistant Elephant Curator serves as an assistant to the Curator/Elephant Manager and maintains all aspects of the care and welfare of the elephants at the National Zoo. The Biologist may also be tasked with providing care to any other animals within the Unit. In this position, you will: Manage all aspects of daily care of the elephant collection and other exotic animals managed by the Unit. Maintain compliance with policies and standards for animal care. Assist with the upkeep of the elephant facilities and exhibit elements. Identify and provide recommendations on housing and safety requirements associated with the elephant facility. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position such as zoology, animal behavior, conservation, and ecology. or Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic qualification requirement above: Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as: Serving as an animal keeper with leadership responsibilities in an elephant program in an AZA accredited zoo; training elephants for medical and husbandry procedures, managing elephant social interactions (such as introductions, breeding encounters, calves), writing protocols and procedures, and training other keepers in elephant care. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Or Education: To qualify at the GS-09 grade level based on education, applicants must successfully complete 2 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the work of the position.
