Duolingo’s Design Systems team is brand new. We have a thoughtful and beautiful design language and a team of industry-leading animators–but we are now focused on developing a coherent, cohesive, and repeatable system for product designers and engineers. We’re looking for our first Motion Designer; someone to be focused on our motion design system and creating thoughtful patterns in partnership with our artists and animators.
You Are Excited About...

• Working on shippable motion patterns, alongside building a system and approach to motion at Duolingo
• Sweating the small stuff of motion design details, and building high-quality documentation and systems
• Partnering closely with product designers, animators, and engineers to understand how we’re using motion now, and how we can make it more consistent and higher-quality

You will...

• Take on motion design patterns, working in collaboration with animators and product designers to ship UI motion projects
• Mentor and teach designers across the company about how to harness the motion system so our UI motion feels delightful and meaningful, even when you are not involved day to day
• Audit and understand the current implementation of our motion design, and make plans to iteratively improve it

You have...

• Proven ability to communicate technical issues effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders at different levels of the organization
• Outstanding leadership and negotiation skills
• Experience building a motion design system
• Proven ability to create and execute detailed plans accounting for ambiguity, dependencies, and technical complexity
• Demonstrated self-direction, with a desire both to learn new techniques and teach others
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, start-up environment

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience as a motion designer
• Ability to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA or New York, NY
• Experience building a reusable motion design system

Exceptional candidates will have...

• Familiarity with or contributions to a public design system, such as Material Design
• Experience working on an early-stage design system team at another company
• Experience articulating business questions, and using available data to find answers that translate into business recommendations

We invest in and support our Duos! This role is eligible for a robust compensation package of base salary, equity, and Duolingo’s world-class benefits. The starting base salary range for this role is, $ 148,800 - $ 274,600 . Actual salary may vary based on level, work experience, performance, and other factors evaluated during the hiring process.
