Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:
The Mental Health Tech/Sitter is responsible for providing safe, appropriate and effective care for patients who have been assessed and demonstrate behaviors suggestive of risk for suicide, risk of harm to self and others, substance abuse, addiction and other behaviors that pose a serious and significant safety risk. The sitter will contact the staff nurse as appropriate with concerns. The sitter functions under the direct supervision of the nurse responsible for the care of the patient.
The Mental Health Tech/Sitter supports the mission of the organization as a member of the multidisciplinary team in providing the highest, quality healthcare to include individualized, patient and family-centered, holistic and supportive care in a safe and caring environment

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Receive a hand off report from the assigned patient’s nurses and outgoing sitter regarding patient’s behavioral status, current condition, mobility and diet.
2. Provides and documents observed patient behaviors by using the flow sheet based on the established standard processes, policies and procedures.
3. Provide constant observation through direct visual monitoring at all times including procedures, daily activities, such as bathing, toileting and other therapies. Family is not a substitute for sitter.
4. Assist the multidisciplinary treatment team in nursing care, but not limited to feeding and toileting.
5. Monitor patients to provide a safe environment free from falls or any harm.
6. Observe and report any complications/ deviations/unusual behavior of the patient or environment to the patient’s assigned nurse immediately.
7. Use of personal devices such as cell phone is prohibited while in the patient’s room.
8. Follows appropriate AIDET guidelines.
9. Provides support to the patient, family, visitors and care team of assigned patients.
10. Must remain with the patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
11. Provide a hand off report at the end of the shift to the primary nurses and oncoming sitter.
12. The sitter should remain in the room closest to the door at all times.
13. Adhere to entity policies, procedures and defined standards.
14. All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:
  • Vocational or Technical Degree such as Emergency Medical Technician preferred
  • High school graduate or equivalent
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:
  • One year in acute care or mental health setting preferred
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
  • De-escalation training within the first 90 days of employment
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Skill and ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to listen, empathizes and responds to the needs of the patient and family.
  • Skill and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in-writing.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
