Job Description
Position Summary:
The Mental Health Technician will be working in the Behavioral Health Unit at South Seminole Hospital. They will be performing general nursing care to patients in a manner that considers safety, comfort, and the therapeutic environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN).
Qualifications:
Education/Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Licensure/Certification
  • Maintains current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain current Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience
  • 180 days experience as Mental Health Technician, Psychology Technician, Nursing Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant or Corpsman.
Responsibilities:
  • Assists with nursing education groups.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Completes assignments of AM/PM care, vital signs, phlebotomy, total milieu supervision of patient care: assist members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines; assist with admissions and discharges as assigned.
  • May have limited access to areas storing medications.
  • Demonstrates competency in unit specific tasks and skill as defined by unit specific competency list.
  • Communicates appropriate information regarding the patient’s condition to the RN and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Documents observations on assigned patients in legible, accurate and appropriate format following hospital and unit procedures.

Other Related Functions
  • Participates in nursing Performance Improvement (PI) activities as assigned.
  • Practices efficient use of supplies.
  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues, patient rights and compliance with the standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s/area’s/department’s policies and procedures.
  • Transports and delivers items and equipment throughout the facility.
  • Maintains a safe, clean and organized unit.
  • Receive and process incoming calls, patient calls and guest requests.
