The MSL is part of a regional therapeutic area MSL team within Field Based Medicine (FBM), who reports into the Director, Head of FBM. The focus of this role is field based scientific exchange (SE), for which the MSL will leverage their scientific background, industry knowledge, and business acumen to act as a scientific resource to scientific experts (SCEs), while gathering insights that inform Scientific Objectives (SOs) and strategic decision making by Medicine. Within their territory, MSLs are responsible for establishing, cultivating, and maintaining relationships with SCEs. Further, the MSL functions as an extension of the medical information group to provide product and pipeline therapeutic area expertise to SCEs and HCPs, and as a scientific expert to internal stakeholders within Medicine and Commercial groups at Milestone. The MSL is a broadly collaborative member of Milestone, who is expected to communicate seamlessly with other members of the field-based organization and perform all activities in a compliant manner. In addition, the MSL will provide have responsibility to cover select Congresses attending sessions, managing the medical information booth (MIB), hosting debriefs, and providing an executive summary to the appropriate members of the Milestone leadership team. The MSL may participate in disease education activities, as well as be responsible for providing internal and external scientific training.

YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

Customer Interactions and Scientific Exchange:

  • The MSL collaborates with the field-based medicine team, Medical Affairs, appropriate Commercial personnel, and the broader organization – in a seamless and efficient manner.
  • Act as a scientific resource to SCEs and HCPs to reactively answer specific questions on disease state topics and Milestone compounds through scientific exchange
  • Act as a scientific resource to Scientific Experts at payer accounts and integrated delivery networks when requested
  • Proactively conduct scientific exchange with SCEs to support the SOs
  • Establish and maintain scientific relationships with SCEs, while developing a strong understanding of territory specific healthcare systems and clinical practices related to patient care, disease management, treatment protocols, and research interests
  • The overarching objective of the MSL is to be in the field conducting scientific exchange with prioritized SCEs. Therefore, the principal effort of the MSL will be focused on planning, preparing for, and conducting field-based interactions and scientific exchange in support of the Scientific Objectives (SOs). Specific aspects of the role include, but may not be limited to:
  • Provide disease state education on topics related to SOs as appropriate

Specific aspects include, but may not be limited to:

  • Facilitate logistical communications between Milestone and HCPs regarding Investigator Initiated Studies (IIS), External Collaborative Research (ECR), company study contracts, etc., as requested
  • In alignment with Clinical Operations, interact with current and potential Milestone study investigators and clinical trial sites to support clinical trial activities
  • Document field generated scientific insights within appropriate system(s), and communicate to appropriate internal stakeholders, as required
  • Demonstrates high ethical standards and integrity, including demonstrated adherence to all corporate, compliance, and regulatory guidelines and procedures
  • Develop a tactical customer-centric medical engagement plan for their geography in alignment with management, and provide internal and external scientific support – as required
  • Identify, document, discuss, and communicate scientific insights as guided by the SOs.
  • Identify and learn about new and evolving customers and the changing medical needs of such customers
  • Proactively monitor and adjust tactical medical engagement plan to better achieve SOs
  • Support identification of training needs to effectively engage in scientific exchange
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs and other clinical functions, to provide scientific support and communicate scientific insights
  • Identify and communicate challenging gaps between Milestone and customer expectations, needs, and priorities
  • Incorporate compliance and ethical decision-making into all business practices and seek appropriate advice and counsel on new proposed activities.
  • Support communication of scientific insights across the Medical and Commercial organizations, as directed by management. Identify changes in the healthcare landscape and trends impacting delivery within the territory (i.e. new stakeholders impacting the delivery of or access to care).
  • Participate in the discussion of scientific insights gathered by the MSL and/or HOL teams, in order to understand the breadth of insights, potential impact, and to stimulate scientific exploration, as directed by management
  • Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise through continuous learning and knowledge of the scientific literature
  • Collaborate to provide field based scientific expertise for key accounts, as required
  • Provide additional scientific support for Medicine and Scientific Affairs activities which may include but are not limited to support for scientific congresses and medical information.
  • Maintain regular communication with the FBM Teams to review ongoing activities and insights, share best practices, and communicate learnings
  • Collaborate within the FBM Teams (MSL and/or HOL) on all aspects of planning, execution, sharing of best practices, and insight generation related discussion in order to understand the breadth of insights, potential impact, and to stimulate scientific exploration
  • Specific aspects include, but may not be limited to:
  • Collaborate with Commercial personnel, as appropriate and in a compliant manner, to provide scientific support for internal and external activities where there is a defined and appropriate scientific role for FBM
  • Ensure FBM policies, procedures, and guidance are adhered to and Perform all Company business in accordance with all regulations (e.g. EEO FDA, OSHA, PDMA, EPA PhRMA, etc.).
  • Specific aspects of the role include, but may not be limited to:
  • Support identification and assist with development of scientific materials, as directed, required to effectively conduct scientific exchange.
  • Proactively develop a territory specific medical engagement plan for scientific exchange with prioritized SCEs, which supports the SOs and priorities

ABOUT YOU

  • Requires the knowledge and expertise to interpret expert insights and share this information with internal stakeholders across multiple functions
  • Ability to readily interpret scientific data, understand the potential impact of data on clinical approaches and research needs, and communicate scientific data to broad audiences.
  • BSc. from an accredited institution required, and in addition fulfill one of the following education levels and experience criteria:
  • Builds strong relationships with peers and cross-functionally with partners outside of team and/or organization to enable higher performance
  • Communication skills which display comfort, agility, and confidence in a variety of situations.
  • Advanced science / clinical degree (PharmD, M.D., DO, Ph.D.) with one or more (1+) years of relevant clinical or therapeutic experience (preferred), or
  • Two or more (2+) years of experience as a MSL within the respective therapeutic area with primary emphasis on field based scientific exchange – preferred.
  • Masters level degree in health sciences with three or more (3+) years of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience, or
  • Challenges the status quo by asking appropriate questions and offering alternative solutions
  • Embodies a can-do entrepreneurial mindset with a willingness to both lead and support key company initiatives
  • Requires a deep understanding of scientific, clinical, market and product information and the ability to discuss and communicate this information with top experts in their field.
  • Creates a learning environment and is open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement
  • Demonstrate high ethical and profession standards with all business contacts
  • Ability to use field-based electronic or other communication tools for all aspects of job.
  • Combined BSc. with a MBA, or BSN with a MBA, and five or more (5+) years of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience, or A PA with three or more (3+) years of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience.
  • 50% Travel
  • Other medically qualified licensure (e.g. RPh, Respiratory Therapist) with seven or more (7+) years of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience.
