Job Description

:

Coordinates and delivers both verbal and written language interpretation and related services to meet the multicultural and educational needs of the facility/hospital, patients, and families.

  • Coordinates interpretation assignments. Keeps timely, accurate records of all interpretation encounters.
  • Assists in the process of identifying and testing the bilingual fluency of Qualified Bilingual Staff (QBS). Participates in the training and onboarding of QBS, interns, and staff interpreters.
  • Provides complete and accurate interpretation for patients, families, and Intermountain staff in order to facilitate clear communication, either in-person, over video or telephone.
  • Demonstrates proficiency as a translator from the source language to the target language and vice versa, and completes translation assignments in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Acts as liaison between Language Services leadership and assigned units/clinics. Manages relations with assigned units, rounding with managers to determine equipment and educational needs for language services, and encourages open, flexible communication with coworkers, hospital personnel and physicians to create a positive team environment and a seamless service delivery.
  • Manages time productively, displaying a proactive approach to the job. Responds to requests (pagers, calls, Vocera, etc.) in a timely manner, even when actively interpreting, and provides staff an estimated time of arrival for interpretation assignments. Refers staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and renders unbiased interpretation to ensure an accurate exchange of information.
  • Adheres to accepted norms of professional ethics and standards of practice for Medical Interpreters, as well as Intermountain Policies, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 1557 of the ACA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission requirements.
  • May perform supplier invoice audits, as well as produce monthly and annual reports.
  • Uses communication methods appropriate for patient developmental age and mental condition.
  • Uses computer, software, and internet tools for translation, research, data entry, and other communication purposes within the work environment.
  • Assists patients, families, and staff with sight translation of forms and is familiar with most commonly used medical terminology.
  • Evaluates supplier's performance and compliance with Intermountain policies.
  • Assists patients, families, guests, and Intermountain staff in understanding provided services. Recognizes and troubleshoots concerns, escalating matters when needed to provide resolution. Identifies learning or cultural needs for limited English proficiency (LEP) patients and families, as well as Intermountain employees, and provides alternatives to facilitate understanding.
  • Identifies educational needs and assists in the development and implementation of educational resources for hospital staff regarding access to, and compliance with Intermountain’s Communication Assistance Policy and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced, high pressure and constantly changing environment.
  • Successful completion of an accredited, professional training course on medical interpreting of 40 or more hours (e.g. Bridging the Gap: Training for Medical Interpreters, The Community Interpreter International: Medical Edition, or any equivalent course accepted by either The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or the Certification Commission for Health Care Interpreters (CCHI) as an educational pre-requisite for national certification).
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written command of both source and target language, as to reach an "Advanced Professional Performance" or level 4 in the ILR scale (or equivalent as approved by Manager).
  • Bachelor's degree. Education must be obtained through an accredited Institution. Degree will be verified. or Two years of college and two years of experience as professional medical interpreter.
  • Demonstrated excellent command of technical translation skills of both source and target language. Able to perform written translations from source to target language and from target to source language with a high degree of accuracy in both languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation with a high degree of accuracy in both languages.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advanced medical terminology in source and target language(s), and knowledge of medical procedures.
  • Utah Certification for Medical Language Interpreters, Tier 1 for applicable languages (Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Russian, Arabic), or Tier 2 for other languages.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of college-level medical terminology course.
  • ATA Certification
  • Completion of college-level human anatomy and physiology course.
  • Two or more years of relevant work experience as a staff medical interpreter or translator.
