Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates operating health centers across the U.S. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education.

PPFA seeks a Media Assistant to support the work of the Communications Department. This job reports to the Director of Federal Advocacy Communications in the Communications & Culture division of PPFA. The department provides strategic communications guidance, support and tactics to PPFA and Planned Parenthood affiliates.

Purpose:

Planned Parenthood Federation of America seeks a media assistant who is responsible for providing administrative support for the communications team activities, monitoring and analyzing media coverage of relevant news and issues, distributing incoming media requests, leading the team’s daily tipsheet, and maintaining press lists. The position supports federal advocacy communications, state advocacy communications, and Latino communications teams.

Delivery:
  • Helps develop and maintain media lists and distributes press releases and other press materials through software systems and manually.
  • Schedules and coordinates conference call logistics and agendas for both internal calls and external calls with members of the media.
  • Helps draft and send out the team’s daily tipsheet to reporters.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned
  • Helps track, compile and circulate media coverage in English and Spanish to appropriate staff in real time.
  • Posts media material to Planned Parenthood website(s).
  • Compiles news clips into comprehensive daily summaries.
  • Monitors media inquiry phone line and email inbox, distributes media requests to appropriate staff, and ensures that incoming requests are followed up on.

Engagement:
  • Collaborates with advocacy media teams on creating reports on media activities and tracking earned media work across teams.
  • Recommends ways to increase readership on daily tipsheets and improve internal efficiencies.
  • Helps to manage relationships with external vendors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Detail-oriented in a fast-paced multi-task environment. Quick to learn new systems and processes; Great at troubleshooting and finding innovative ways to solve problems.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • 1-2 years of media relations, customer service, or work experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Google products (Gmail, Google Documents, Google Drive, Google Calendar), e-mail marketing tools, and media management systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or two years of work experience preferred.
  • Ability to write media materials in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights issues preferred.
  • Knowledge of diverse groups, working with a diverse workforce, and sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences are required.
  • Interest in and/or familiarity with the news media landscape is strongly preferred.
  • Flexibility to work occasional night and/or weekend hours in emergency, rapid response situations.
  • Must be fluent in Spanish.

Travel:
0-10%

$62,000 - $67,000 a year
