Job Description

Join a team of dedicated railroaders to provide vital maintenance and services to trains, so they can continue to serve Union Pacific customers across North America! As a Mechanical Service Operator, you’ll be responsible for everything from stocking locomotives with necessary materials to cleaning assigned areas to help operate locomotives in shop and service areas. On this vital team, you’ll become familiar with all functions of the shop environment and will gain a big-picture understanding of Union Pacific's mechanical operations! Accountabilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations for safety and operations
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle controversy
  • Clean interiors and exteriors of locomotives including floors, parts, and engine car body
  • Perform air brake tests and inspect materials, equipment, and machinery for any defects or unsafe conditions
  • Safely and effectively operate shop machines and tools, which may include forklifts, backhoes, bobcats, mobile cranes or high-pressure steam cleaning equipment
  • Communicate effectively with team members via hand radio and hand signals on service track and other areas
  • Restock locomotives with all necessary materials, including drinking water, sand, and spare parts
  • Ensure the safety of self and co-workers
  • Take initiative, make meaningful contributions, be open to change, and take responsibility for the quality and timely completion of one's tasks
  • Operate locomotives between various shop locations, service tracks, and switching areas, and line switches and operate derails to assist hostlers

Qualifications

Required
  • Able to effectively work independently and in group settings
  • Experience reading and understanding instructions (examples may include: operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents)
  • Mechanical experience understanding and applying basic mechanical principles to solve mechanical problems
  • Valid driver's license
  • Able to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems
  • Able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text

  • Able to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations

  • Experience with computers and basic keyboarding skills
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
Preferred
  • Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
  • Basic electronic OR high voltage electricity experience
  • Basic hand AND power tool experience
  • Basic mechanical experience

Physical Requirements

  • Have normal depth perception to judge the speed and distance of locomotives being moved in the service area
  • Able to occasionally bend, stoop, and kneel and lift and carry objects weighing up to 85 lbs
  • Must be able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays, and identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances
  • Able to make frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects, and the ability to respond quickly to sounds
  • Safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces
  • Must have manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and ability to perform physically strenuous work
  • Must have normal color vision
  • Able to detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and testing

Work Conditions

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires
  • Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes
  • Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
  • Successful completion of vocational classes in electronics or mechanics
