The mechanic performs repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment in and around shipyard facility.
Job Functions
The mechanic:
- Plans work procedure using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
- Will be required to wear all of the necessary personal protective equipment such as, hard hats, eye and hearing protection, gloves, and dust and respiratory protection.
- May remove, dismantle, and rebuild engine, transmission, clutch, rear end, and other components of drive trains.
- Lubricates moving parts and drives or tests vehicle to verify conformance to specifications.
- Performs other duties including fabrication or repair of metal components such as exhaust systems, chassis repair, and structural repair.
- Has knowledge of electrical, fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, brake, and other automotive systems necessary.
- Examines vehicle or equipment and determines nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
- Changes oil, checks batteries, repairs tires, and tubes, and lubricates equipment and machinery.
- Performs maintenance on all vehicles and motorized equipment in and around shipyard.
- May fabricate lifting or towing, attachments hydraulic systems, shields, or other such devices.
- Examines protective guards, nuts and bolts, and specified safety devices and makes adjustments as required.
- Determines what parts are necessary for repair and requisitions parts accordingly.
Working Conditions
Scheduled workdays cover Monday through Friday plus weekends and holidays as required. The mechanic works in all kinds of weather and at different locations throughout the shipyard. He or she may be called on to perform work at an alternate location away from facility. The mechanic is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working at heights greater than six feet, working over water, and in confined spaces. The mechanic may be called on to work alone. He or she may be subject to dramatic temperature changes, fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and/or hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing, and eye protection, hardhats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.
Physical Requirements
The mechanic will be subject to repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.
This job is classified as heavy work, exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or IO to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.
