The City of Lake Worth Beach invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of MD Inspector.
This is a Full Time, Non-Exempt position based on a 40-hour work week with a hourly range of $27.55 - $34.43 per hour. This position is part of the Public Employees Union (PEU) collective bargaining agreement. The individual in this position will work out of the Community Sustainability Building located at 1900 2nd Ave N, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460.

SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, inspect buildings to enforce building, electrical, mechanical, gas, fuel oil and/or plumbing and fire sprinkler, zoning, disabled access and related codes within area of certification; informs contractor regarding code requirements; interprets architectural drawings; inspects properties for use and occupancy compliance, and performs related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (which are not in any hierarchical order)
- Inspect according to plans to ascertain compliance with applicable building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and air movement systems (HVAC), and/or zoning, energy, disabled access and related codes.
- Reviews new materials and methods used in building construction; attends training courses to learn of new codes and other inspection regulations; takes an active part in the training process.
- Other duties as assigned related to the overall mission of the Department for Community Sustainability.
- Files new and completed plans.
- Drafts correspondence explaining reasons a inspection was disapproved.
- Performs job site and property inspections as required, with appropriate licensure, including Use and Occupancy inspections.
- Answers questions in person and on the phone regarding inspections and code requirements.
- Researches codes for approval or disapproval of inspections, especially in unusual or unique installations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Skill in providing good customer service.
- Knowledge of minimum housing code.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of the construction industry.
- Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints.
- Knowledge of basic code compliance and use and occupancy compliance requirements and codes.
- Skill in the use of a variety of office equipment including personal computers and related software.
- Knowledge of building, electrical, mechanical, and/or plumbing, zoning, energy and disabled access codes and regulations affecting work.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of construction and related materials and tools.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Position involves moderate to heavy work generally in an outdoor setting. There is frequent need to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear, use hands, climb kneel, stoop, lift (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. The City of Lake Worth promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma and five (4) years construction experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires State licensure as a Building, Residential and Commercial Electrical, Mechanical or Plumbing Inspector or ability to obtain within one (1) year of date of employment or qualify for the inspector intern program. A valid Florida driver’s license is required. National Incident Management System (NIMS) Series IS 100, IS 200, IS 559, IS 700, IS 800 certifications must be attained within six (6) months of hire date and others as needed for EOC position assigned.
