Job Description

Who We Are:

Helmut's Marine Service is an Authorized Volvo Penta Power Center for CA, HI, AZ, NM, NV, UT, and Guam. We strive to provide the highest level of service and factory support to Volvo Penta leisure and commercial customers. Our family owned and operated company offers secure, non-seasonal work. We invest in our employees and offer on the job training as well as continuous factory training to allow our technicians to grow professionally. All technical positions are based on ‘straight time and overtime’ hours. We are not a flat rate environment. Individual advancement is based on job performance efficiency and training qualifications. Our workshop is equipped with advanced diagnostics systems, the full range of special tools and the very latest service information. We also have one of the largest genuine Volvo Penta Parts and Engine inventories in the country to allow for seamless workflow. This position includes, diagnosing and determining proper parts and labor efforts to arrive at solutions for Volvo Penta customers. This includes on site and travel to vessels within the San Francisco Bay Area. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of marine systems and a basic knowledge of boats.

Essential Functions

  • Determines engine, drives, and controls condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs Volvo Penta propulsion system pre-delivery commissioning (PDC).
  • Accept ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; explores value add opportunities.
  • Installs and commissions Volvo Penta engines, drives and controls.
  • Completes overhauls as well as other repairs and services identified during the diagnostic process.
  • Provides guidance, assistance, and training to apprentice marine technicians.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and organized work environment.
  • Contains costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
  • Completes Volvo Penta preventative maintenance (hour and annual services).
  • Works with vessel operator to verify performance by conducting sea trials and making necessary adjustments as needed.
  • Maintains engine and vessel records with accurate documentation of service and repairs.
  • Communicates while on site with customer in a professional manner.

Competencies

  • Basic understanding of diesel engine electronic controls.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to clearly communicate with technical support, sales, and management.
  • Ability to perform repairs in a timely fashion.
  • Must work well independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals, operating instructions, and work orders.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluent with electrical multi-meters.
  • Complete company provided manufacture training – online and in person.
  • Ability to visually diagnose mechanical issues.
  • Strong Laptop/PC skills.

Preferred Education/Experience & Requirements:

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is a plus
  • Own a set of mechanics tools.
  • Experience operating a boat a plus.
  • A forklift certification is a plus.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license and must be insurable.
  • 5+ years experience working with in board out board products
  • Experience with integrating cockpit electronics with propulsion system is a plus.
  • Technical schooling a plus.
  • Experience with Vodia is a plus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Occasional overtime is required.

Travel

Technicians may need to travel to vessels to perform service call or to attend factory training and will be provided a company vehicle.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
