Veterinary Fellowship Summary
Under the direction of the Sr Director of Animal Health, the Veterinary Fellow will undergo post-graduate training at ZooTampa for providing critical care to rescued manatees as well as routine and emergency medical care to the general zoo population. On completion of the required manatee training, the fellow will be eligible for certification as a Manatee Critical Care Veterinarian through the USFWS. The fellow is expected to implement and maintain the standards of veterinary care as required by the Animal Welfare Act (APHIS-USDA) and AZA as part of the animal health team.

Your day to day
Essential Functions (Including, but not limited to):
  • Complete training and exhibit proficiency in essential laboratory procedures, including but not limited to complete blood counts, manual differential assessment, biochemistry, coagulation panels, and fecal analysis.
  • Participate in daily manatee case management and care, with the goal of primary case management of critical cases
  • Examine sick or injured animals and perform necessary diagnostics and treatment, including responding to emergencies.
  • Opportunity for completion of clinical research, with the goal of professional presentation and/or publication.
  • Manatee Critical Care
    • Complete literature reviews and didactic study on manatee medicine resources including in-house protocols and procedures
    • Participate in daily manatee case management and care, with the goal of primary case management of critical cases
    • Complete training and exhibit proficiency in manatee medical procedures, including but not limited to venipuncture, injections, nasogastric tubing, imaging, sedation, thoracocentesis, and wound care.
    • Maintain positive and collaborative communication between the Animal Health and Animal Care teams regarding medical and husbandry decision-making for manatee patients.
    • Complete training and exhibit proficiency in essential laboratory procedures, including but not limited to complete blood counts, manual differential assessment, biochemistry, coagulation panels, and fecal analysis.
    • Maintain accurate medical records and facilitate communication with Animal Care teams, as well as oversight organizations such as the Manatee Recovery Program (MRP) and USFWS with guidance from the Sr Director of Animal Health.
    • Establish eligibility for certification as a Manatee Critical Care Veterinarian through the USFWS following completion of training managed by the Sr Director of Animal Health.
    • Opportunity for completion of clinical research, with the goal of professional presentation and/or publication.
  • Assist in monitoring disease prevalence within the collection.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and facilitate communication with Animal Care teams, as well as oversight organizations such as the Manatee Recovery Program (MRP) and USFWS with guidance from the Sr Director of Animal Health.
  • Conduct all activities in alignment with AZA standards and guidelines, all relevant laws and regulations, safety standards, and standards that ensure animal welfare.
  • General Zoo Health
    • Assist in implementing the preventative medicine program to include parasite surveillance procedures and control, immunization, infectious diseases screening such as using serology and tuberculosis testing, and dental prophylaxis, birth control, humane euthanasia standards and regular physical examinations.
    • Assist in implementing the quarantine program to include clinical and laboratory tests for health.
    • Regularly maintain and update the medical records (ZIMS) including diagnosis, prescribed treatment and medications, and other relevant data, and manage the animal identification system in coordination with the Registrar.
    • Assist in monitoring disease prevalence within the collection.
    • Assist in assessing animal nutrition, animal husbandry, and sanitation protocols.
    • Conduct and assist in necropsies on animals as to cause of death, disease surveillance, and clinical research requirements.
    • Examine sick or injured animals and perform necessary diagnostics and treatment, including responding to emergencies.
  • Conduct and assist in necropsies on animals as to cause of death, disease surveillance, and clinical research requirements.

  • Represent the zoo and promote staff, professional and public education through speaking engagements and conferences.
  • Maintain State of Florida Veterinary License, USDA Accredited Veterinarian License, and continuing education hours.
  • Participate in daily rounds to review the health of the animals at ZooTampa and communicate with animal care and animal health staff.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
  • Knowledge of disease pathology, veterinary procedures and practices with domestic and non-domestic animals and the technical expertise to apply those practices in a zoological setting.
  • Experience in applied biology, unique anatomy, special physiology, social structure and reproduction of a wide variety of wild animals.
  • Experience and expertise in drugs used in wild animals, their use and safe handling including the very dangerous ultra-potent narcotics; also the various dart systems used to administer the drugs.
  • Knowledge of guidelines established by AZA, AAZV, AAHA, and APHIS-USDA, and other organizations.
  • Experience with manatees preferred but not required.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Work long hours and an unpredictable work schedule and be on call for emergencies.

Education/Experience:
  • Post-doctoral internship or training in a zoological park, aquarium, and/or specialization with exotic animals is preferred.
  • Experience with ZIMs and Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in non-domestic animal medicine in a zoo, aquarium or related facility.
  • Minimum requirement includes graduation from an accredited Doctoral Program in Veterinary Medicine as well as USDA Accreditation, Florida License to practice veterinary medicine (or ability to obtain Florida license within 6-8 months).
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to withstand typical Florida climate.
  • Involves strenuous animal catch-ups associated with normal zoo management.
  • Ability to see and hear personnel and animals and respond immediately in an urgent or emergency situation.
  • Position involves sitting, standing, walking, and heaving lifting.
