Job Description

Bio-Link Depot has a unique role in the education and sustainability ecosystems. We receive

donated scientific equipment and supplies and redirect, reuse and/or repurpose them to facilitate

hands-on scientific learning in under-resourced schools and the circular economy. Over nearly two

decades, we have impacted over 500,000 students and redirected hundreds of thousands of pounds of

materials away from waste streams

The Managing Director’s primary responsibilities will be the overall operations for the Bio-Link Depot, Inc.

(Depot) including management of staff, volunteers, contractors, operations, programs, sales, and

execution of the Depot’s mission. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community

outreach. This is an exempt full-time position reporting directly to the Board of Directors (“Board”).

The Depot’s physical location is a warehouse in Oakland. The Managing Director role is anticipated to be

a full-time hybrid role that combines time at the Depot with time at donor-centric events and elsewhere for

off-site administrative tasks, as appropriate. The role is compensated with both a base salary and bonus

structure tied to the achievement of the key goals set in collaboration with the Board.

Responsibilities

  • Research and execute grant proposals for funding from community organizations, corporations, foundations and other potential revenue sources to ensure adequate funding to sustain the Depot’s operations
  • Sign and approve notes, contracts, and agreements on behalf of the Depot, consistent with delegated authority
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations
  • Maintain and manage small paid staff and larger volunteer pool
  • Promote and publicize the activities of the organization, its programs, and goals via website, social media and email distributions
  • Oversee and enhance Depot’s sales program (equipment & supplies)
  • Work with the Board in preparing an annual budget
  • Develop and track metrics to evaluate the Depot’s programs, and communicate them to the Board, funders, and other constituents
  • Oversee implementation of all Board directives, policies, and procedures
  • Serve as the Depot’s primary representative/spokesperson to the organization’s beneficiaries, customers, suppliers, donors, media, partners, and the general public
  • Develop systems, oversee processes, and implement resources to ensure efficient and effective Depot operations

Qualifications

  • Able to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Material management skills and knowledge of warehouse safety procedures
  • Experience developing, nurturing and managing donor and funder relationships. Experience with fundraising and public relations.
  • Action-oriented, self-directed, entrepreneurial, and adaptable
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration with a minimum of 3 years related experience in administration of volunteer, nonprofit, public service agency or equivalent
  • Strong organizational management with the ability to coach staff and volunteers. Ability to manage, and achieve strategic objectives set by the Board
  • Strong project/program organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to convey the Depot’s vision to staff, Board, volunteers and funders
  • Knowledge of scientific equipment and supplies is a plus
