Job Summary
Reporting to the Sr. Director, Career Advancement in the Research & Practice department, this position supports the Institute’s efforts to advance the professional needs of mid-career architectural professionals, typically licensed and architects on a project management track, while also supporting the career needs for those earlier in their career as well as those underrepresented in the profession, such as women or BIPOC, etc. The Manager will work collaboratively with other members of the Research & Practice department that support professional practice, architecture firms, and encourage youth and student pathways into the profession.
The Manager will focus on at-risk professional segments, such as those from underrepresented populations, to help eliminate barriers that lead to the loss of this portion of the architectural workforce. The core work for this position is Our programs are designed to focus on business and leadership skills to grow the practice of architecture, lead change and innovation, empower and engage people, and create immediate impact.
Job Duties:
- Support AIA’s leadership programs (such as the Women’s Leadership Summit), professional development resources and content, mentorship and sponsorship programs, and other efforts that help mid-career professionals move through their careers.
- Manages and develops knowledge resources serving mid-career architectural professionals, including education programming, written resources, and website postings.
- Prepares management reports and documents the progress of projects and strategic initiatives, as necessary.
- Support other projects as needed for the Career Advancement and larger Research & Practice team.
- Acts as a liaison to membership groups that serve this professional segment, including the Young Architects Forum (YAF)
- Coordinates formal and informal education and resources to the AIA national and component staff, volunteers, and the general membership that serve the professional needs of mid-career professionals.
- Manages speaker agreements and other contracts working with AIA’s Legal and Business Affairs team.
- Supports AIA’s larger goals to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion into the profession, in particular the gender equity work, including identifying areas to infuse intersectional representation and voice into AIA programs.
- Serves as a project lead for gender equity programming, including the AIA Women’s Leadership Summit and other convenings and education.
- Manages project workflow of department projects and initiatives pertaining to mid-career architectural professionals.
- Serves as an interface with AIA local components, partners, sponsors, and volunteer planning committees as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Manages and develops marketing and communication plans and content delivery analytics in coordination with the AIA marketing and communications team to elevate communication and awareness of career support resources through approved web and media vehicles, national and trade publications, social media, and public relations, ensuring compliance with AIA Brand Guidelines and Policies.
- Act as an internal resource around areas of professional development for architects.
- Supports AIA’s professional short-term and long-term leadership development programs, with an emphasis on revenue generation.
- Supports the Senior Director, Career Advancement, in tracking budget, project timelines, and other reporting needed for the team.
- Serves as a project liaison with cross-teams necessary to complete projects, most importantly the marketing and communication, events, and continuing education teams.
- Contribute to research on specific member groups, career stages, or the architectural profession at large, as needed.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications
Strong communication and writing skills, project management, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently required. Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in effective design and implementation of professional educational programs and leadership development subject matter expertise, preferred. Experience in programmatic and content development; speaker management experience; management of revenue generating programs and products; innovative engagement opportunities and events development (virtual and in-person); equity, diversity and profession in the workplace and workforce; career support and talent service; and volunteer management strongly preferred, as well as experience with creative collaborations and working across teams (such as marketing & communication, sales, legal, etc.). Knowledge of the architecture profession, research, and data-monitoring and leadership programs is beneficial, but not required. The individual will be creative, curious, driven, and can work collaboratively with a team or independently.
Proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint are essential. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite software, Zoom, and Miro is beneficial. Knowledge and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion strongly desired.
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a design, architecture, leadership, marketing/communications, public policy/administration, or education field with a minimum of 4-5 years related experience required. Background in a non-profit or association environment is strongly preferred. Up to 10% travel required, including on weekends.

Work Location: 100% Remote from the AIA Approved States: DC, MD, VA, AR, DE, FL, GA*, ID, IL, IA, KS, KY, ME, MI, MN, MT, NH, NM, NY, NC, OK, PA, SD, TN, UT, VT, WI, WY

This position will be required to be on-site at the AIA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. at least four times each year at the cost to the employee.
