ABOUT THE LUCAS MUSEUM OF NARRATIVE ART
As the first museum to focus exclusively on storytelling through images, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art believes that visual storytelling can connect us and help shape a more just society. With a growing collection that encompasses artworks from across cultures, places, times, and mediums, including paintings, sculptures, murals, photography, comic art, book and magazine illustrations, and the arts of filmmaking, the Lucas Museum will explore narrative art’s potential to prompt questions, invite opinions, inspire community, and move people to think about the impact of images on our world.
Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson and led by director and CEO Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Lucas Museum was designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect and is under construction in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park. An 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA will embrace the museum’s 300,000-square-foot building, which will feature expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail, and events. .
Position Summary
The Manager of Physical and Technical Security provides technical and physical support for high security areas, security equipment, and security systems. The duties include the installation, use, and maintenance of security equipment, weapons detection systems, x-ray machines, and electronic surveillance. This position may also interact with visitors and employees for security purposes. Responsibilities can include documenting visitor access, electronic data derived from surveillance systems, and the monitoring of all security systems. The Manager, Physical and Technical Security is considered an expert in this field and should have specific training/certifications to reach the expert level in this discipline.
This physical and technical responsibility of the role is associated with the theory and application of physical protection systems which includes the functions of deterrence, detection, delay, and response. Physical security involves in-depth use of multiple layers of interdependent systems such as physical barriers (bollards), Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), video surveillance, security officers, access control, critical infrastructure systems and facilities, and lighting.
Pursuant to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art’s COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination Policy, the museum requires all new hires to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment absent an approved medical and/or religious exemption. Upon hire, all new hires will receive detailed instructions on complying with this policy. Federal, state, or local public health directives may impose additional requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with facilities/engineering, and construction to effectively plan and establish facility physical security requirements for existing and new construction
  • Partners with Security Managers, Human Resources, and General Counsel regarding the background investigation process
  • Deploy state-of-the-art intrusion detection, visitor management, weapons detection, and access control systems
  • Develop and implement cost-effective crime-prevention solutions to deter threats and reduce perimeter vulnerabilities through leveraging physical security barriers
  • Partner with Security Managers, General Counsel, Human Resources, and Finance regarding integrity and ethics investigations
  • Provide direction and guidance to security operations personnel to devise effective facility protection systems and help mitigate loss/shrinkage in the museum retail and restaurant locations
  • Manage and strategically plan the video surveillance and intrusion detection alarm capability for the Security Department within the museum
  • Assist with the development and implementation of fraud detection/preventions systems regarding PCI compliance
  • Conduct in-depth risk and vulnerability assessments to determine museum footprint physical and technical security gaps, deficiencies, and remediation strategies
  • Work with the Technology Department to develop “next generation” physical and technical security tools to ensure compliance with the enterprise architecture
  • Attend law enforcement and public safety “technical security best practices” forums for reducing vulnerabilities regarding cyber-crimes, vandalism/acts of criminality, facility breach, “Insider-Threat”, and acts of terrorism
  • Determine and recommend appropriate Operational Security (OPSEC), System Security Engineering (SSE), and Technical Security Countermeasure requirements
  • Responsible for safeguarding and preventing loss of critical information and assets through the employment of safes, CCTV, alarms, intrusion detection systems, storage containers, locking systems, and security measures applicable to transporting and shipping requirements
  • Design and oversee the installation of appropriate security systems for existing and new facilities
  • Prepares quantitative and qualitative physical security reports for Security Department management and museum executive leadership
  • Oversee, manage, strategically plan and maintain the museum badging and access control systems, special access programs, access control integrity, and “due diligence” enforcement requirements
  • Coordinate investigative activities with Security Managers and other museum curatorial and conservation departments, and internal line of business units (i.e. Human Resources, Legal, Finance, External Affairs, etc.)

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or equivalent relevant work experience
  • Department of Homeland Security critical infrastructure protection, law enforcement/ military experience, or ASIS CPP certification preferred
  • Experience with managing, vetting, and directing security integrator vendor firms to support the technical security responsibility
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in law enforcement, private/corporate security, intelligence community, or military experience in conducting security compliance program activities as defined in the Security Department Framework document
