Job Description

Summary

The Manager, Data Quality, brings data and technical skills to enhance NBOA’s research, data collection and analysis initiatives by ensuring that the data relied upon by NBOA member schools and staff are accurate, reliable and high quality.


The manager is responsible for the daily maintenance of the association’s data reporting platform, Business Intelligence for Independent Schools (BIIS, pronounced “biz”). The manager plays an active role in NBOA’s data partnership with the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) through our DASL/BIIS Financial Operations data entry collaboration and works with NAIS to ensure data quality. The manager supports member schools’ use of the reporting tools in BIIS through the development and implementation of training and resources. The manager develops, implements and maintains an internal data dashboard tool that integrates data across NBOA’s data platforms to uncover trends and insights to strengthen the association and our services to members. This is a new position at NBOA, created to support our expanding research agenda in service of the association’s strategic framework in which data and research play an important role.


Essential Responsibilities


BIIS Maintenance (15%)

  • Suggest technical enhancements to improve data quality or the user experience.
  • Conduct daily system monitoring.
  • Manage platform licenses.
  • Manage data technology partner and support tickets.
  • Monitor BIIS usage.


DASL/BIIS Data Quality and BIIS User Support (50%)

  • Manage the annual DASL/BIIS Financial Operations data scrubbing process, which includes managing financial experts who conduct a deep data review.
  • Develop and implement regular training and create resources to help schools benefit from using the BIIS reporting tools.
  • Assist associations that have BIIS licenses by providing customized training and user support.
  • Assist schools with using the BIIS reporting tools, including responding to questions and helping schools improve the quality of their historical data.
  • Participate in the annual DASL/BIIS Financial Operations data entry process in partnership with NAIS staff. This includes annual system testing, maintaining NBOA’s school membership roster in DASL, conducting an annual data point review and suggesting any changes, developing DASL/BIIS Financial Operations data edit checks, responding to data entry questions from schools, and conducting data entry training in collaboration with NAIS staff.
  • Collaborate with the NBOA Marketing team to support the program through regular communications about data entry and data reporting.
  • Manage and test data imports into BIIS to ensure quality, including from DASL/BIIS Financial Operations data entry and the Commonfund Study of Independent Schools.


Internal Data Analysis and Visualization (35%)

  • Develop, implement and maintain an internal data analytics and visualization tool that integrates data across NBOA systems that meets staff data needs. This tool should integrate data across systems used to manage the association such as membership, marketing, the website, events, professional development offerings and other programs and services.
  • Provide direct support to the Senior Director, Research and Data Analysis and perform other duties as assigned, in alignment with job responsibilities and organizational goals.
  • Understand and document the data needs of NBOA staff and the availability of internal data to meet those needs.
  • Assist the Senior Director, Research and Data Analysis with the member survey and measurement of NBOA’s strategic framework KPIs.
  • Support NBOA staff in using the internal data analytics and visualization tool by providing training, resources and data analysis. Present insights to NBOA staff.


Qualifications

  • Technical skills with data analytics and visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
  • 2-3 years of professional experience in a full-time capacity desired.
  • Data experience in an organization, association, nonprofit or company, including experience in supporting data collection systems and supporting system users.


Skills and Attributes

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to successfully plan, execute and multitask on concurrent activities.
  • Ability to manage time and meet deadlines to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to communicate data insights to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to travel as required, at minimum, approximately one week in either February or March, and for short-term meeting travel.
  • Strong written and oral communications, listening, presentation and interpretation skills.
  • Highly organized, flexible, efficient and willing to accept varied assignments with enthusiasm.
  • Demonstrated commitment to foster, promote and support an inclusive workplace.
  • Commitment to data quality, integrity and accuracy.
  • Proven customer service orientation and commitment to positive interactions with members, partners, service providers and staff.
  • Knowledge of and passion for PK-12 education is highly desirable. Knowledge of independent school financial operations a plus.
  • Ability to work in a virtual/distributed team environment, interacting individually and as part of a team effort.
