Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts
to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and ensure that people have regular access to enough high-quality
food to lead active, healthy lives.
The Türkiye Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FETUR) is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing and implementing strategies for addressing the country's food security, agriculture and rural development priorities. The Organization’s technical assistance includes institution building, development of knowledge and competencies, and exchange of experience in the countries facing transition challenges.

FAO Türkiye is implementing a two-year project entitled “Support for Determination of Agricultural Business Typology Engaged in Livestock Activities (TCP/TUR/3903/C3)” funded by the FAO started in January 2023. The project’s expected outcome is the identified Farm Typology for farmers and rural groups and improved capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye in identifying the farm typology.


Reporting Lines

The Livestock Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the FAO Representative in Turkiye, the technical supervision of the Lead Technical Officer (LTO) of the project, and operational guidance from FAO Türkiye project staff or FAO Representation and in the day-to-day coordination of the FAO Türkiye office. He/she will work in close cooperation with national project consultants, relevant national authorities and other stakeholders.


Technical Focus

The consultant will analyse the current situation on Farm Typology in Türkiye and Europe. The consultant will analyse the current situation of Farm Typology and the available international good practices. Moreover, the consultant will contribute to the organisation of an online consultation involving relevant national stakeholders to introduce the most promising international practices and discuss their feasibility for adoption.


Tasks and responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Sub-regional Coordinator for Central Asia and FAO Representative in Türkiye, direct supervision of the LTO and in collaboration with FAO Turkey team, the Livestock Specialist will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Review the existing system and existing official regulatory documents
  • Prepare a field study plan based on the improved methodology in the action plan
  • Contribute to and lead the finalisation of the technical documents and reports.
  • Contribute to Identification of the pilot farms in Balikesir
  • Conduct a training needs assessment and prepare a curriculum based on the needs identified.
  • Prepare Training of Trainers (ToT) on the action plan and implementation conducted
  • Prepare the Sustainable Livestock Farm Typology Action Plan in collaboration with the National Experts and LTO
  • Contribute to the organisation of an online consultation involving relevant national stakeholders (ministries, consumer groups and academia) to introduce the most promising international practices and discuss their feasibility for adoption.
  • Review the baseline research, including the review of regulations, policies, existing studies, public surveys, and outcomes of stakeholder discussions.
  • Prepared Ad Hoc Livestock Data Collection Plan
  • Analyse the available international good practices
  • Analyze the available international good practices on Farm Typology
  • Contribute to the organisation of the workshops (to discuss and analyse the outline of the national policy document) and online consultations to develop a national policy document.
  • Carry out field visits for data collection activity in the pilot area and make Pilot Data Collection
  • Create and elaborate Sustainable Farm Typology Action Plan

The consultant will receive methodological guidance, including training and support from FAO Lead technical officer a methodological guide to conducting the above-mentioned activities.


CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING


Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in Agricultural engineering, Agricultural economist, zootechnics or animal production,
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in Farm Typology or the ruminant’s subsector preferred
  • Working knowledge of English.
