The incumbent will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans.
Duties include:

  • Accurately reports changes in patients' medical and emotional condition.
  • Seeks assistance from appropriate resource person as needed.
  • Actively communicates and listens clearly in writing and in speaking.
  • Provides safe, individualized, quality care nursing to patients with varying medical/emotional needs.
  • Performs treatments and procedures within the scope of license and facility policy and procedures.
  • Preparing and administering medications, including vaccinations.
  • Providing direct patient care to Veterans with minimal supervision.

Work Schedule: Work Schedule: Full-time, part-time (unit specific part time hours range 8 to 72 per pay period), and intermittent/PRN. Assigned schedule corresponds to specific area (Some areas require days, nights, weekends, rotating shifts and holidays)

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
  • Must possess a full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia.
  • Must be a graduate of school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing.
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-6: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN. Applicants must meet the following:
  • Knowledge of handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during, and following the procedure.
  • Ability to observe, identify and respond to the patient's needs for care.
  • Technical proficiency in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations.
  • Ability to use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments; and to accurately recognize, report and record relevant] patient information.
  • Ability to prepare and administers prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and performs treatments according to established policies/procedures.
Preferred Experience:
  • IV medication administration experience preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year experience preferred.

Physical Requirements: Applicant must possess the ability to do the following: heavy lifting and carrying, 45 pounds and over; pulling, pushing and reaching above the shoulder; walking, standing, kneeling and repeated bending. Ability to distinguish basic colors, correctable vision, and emotional/mental stability.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
