Job Description
The University of Virginia Library seeks a dynamic, collegial, and highly-skilled professional to serve as the Librarian for African American and African Studies. As a member of the Arts and Humanities team, the successful candidate will serve as the liaison to the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies and will also work with library colleagues to support African American and African Studies across UVA’s academic programs and initiatives.
This is an Academic General Faculty (AGF) position on the Library track. AGF positions in the Library are tenure-ineligible. For more information, see https://uvapolicy.virginia.edu/policy/PROV-004#Library_Track .
The Librarian for African American and African Studies will provide communication and outreach to faculty, students, and fellows, cultivating strong partnerships and seeking opportunities for enhanced collaboration. They will provide research assistance to scholars at all levels and participate in digital scholarship projects in collaboration with faculty, students, and library colleagues. The Librarian will engage with faculty to integrate information, digital, and data literacy concepts and skills into the curriculum and will provide instruction in a variety of forms (orientations, course-related instruction, workshops). They will be responsible for working with the collections management team and the other liaisons to establish collection priorities for African American and African Studies, recommend specific purchases, maintain digital desiderata lists, and promote newly acquired resources. They will collaborate with colleagues in Archives and Special Collections on collecting strategies that will support research and teaching in African American and African Studies. The Librarian will be expected to participate in regional and/or national professional organizations related to academic librarianship and librarianship in support of African American Studies in particular.

Expected salary: 70,000-80,0000

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the tools and techniques of library research.
  • Strong academic grounding in African American or African Studies or a closely related field.
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative, team-based organization.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and enthusiasm for the possibilities offered by academic librarianship as a profession.
  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced degree in a relevant subject area along with library experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous professional experience in a liaison or subject specialist role at a research library.
  • Familiarity with relevant languages, such as Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Swahili.
  • Teaching experience in a college or university setting.
