The team member holding the legal counsel - general position reports to Associate General Counsel/Director of Legal Services but works with all lawyers in the Legal Department to provide legal services to the Company, including those relating to administrative charges and employment and commercial litigation; drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts; advice and counsel on compliance issues; and other duties as assigned in order to accomplish business goals while avoiding or mitigating potential risk exposure.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide advice and counsel to Human Resources or other departments relating to investigation of, response to, and evaluation of administrative complaints filed against the Company with federal or state agencies.
- Review, revise, and negotiate contracts proposed by third parties.
- Manage all aspects of employment and commercial litigation, including management of outside counsel, assisting in setting reserves, collection of data and documents for written discovery and working with outside counsel in crafting responses, reviewing and providing input regarding substantive motions, assisting in crafting trial strategy, and attending mediation's and trials when appropriate.
- Draft standardized contracts and agreements for general use by others within the Company.
- Provide legal advice and counsel to the Company relating to compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations; employment and labor relations issues; and contract administration, requirements, amendments, re-negotiations, and terminations.
Job Specifications
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with business teams
- Strong legal acumen with the ability to demonstrate sound judgment
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and evaluation skills
- Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy
- Willingness to tackle matters in and outside areas of expertise with a can-do attitude, understanding that no job is too big or too small
- JD from an ABA accredited law school, active and in good standing with at least one State Bar, 5+ years of legal experience
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to manage and prioritize tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced, and often deadline-driven environment and adapt quickly to changing priorities and legal and regulatory environments
