JUNIOR SPECIALIST DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluating educational program success and effectiveness through formal evaluation methods.
  • Assist in developing and implementing small group-based skills building for students on various academic well-being issues that may arise as the students progress through medical school.
  • Provide medical education expertise for the development of institution-wide interventions, programs, and assessment models that optimize learner academic/clinical performance, including leaders in graduate medical education and the JABSOM graduate programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in the Office of Medical Education (OME), Learning Community Mentors, and/or Evaluation, Remediation and Review Committee (ERRC) to develop individualized educational and remediation plans, including individualized academic counseling for students to promote successful matriculation. Provides feedback and ongoing monitoring of students to ERRC and faculty.
  • Scores and interprets assessment results, and completes assessments of students’ learning and study skills, personality styles, and critical-thinking.
  • Present papers or poster sessions or participating in a panel or discussion group at local, national or international professional conferences, colloquiums, seminars.
  • Provides lectures and small group teaching to learners regarding strategies to optimize their academic/clinical performance
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the OME, the `Imi Ho`?la Program, and the Office of the Designated Institutional Official to improve learner assessment efforts.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of educational programs on student well-being and mental health support for faculty development.
  • Contribute to medical education efforts and research related to educational models that support student academic success and/or well-being and resiliency;
  • Works collaboratively with the academic advisor or learning community mentor, as needed, to develop USMLE preparation plans for individual students.
  • Assists in advising students with disabilities on applying for accommodations on USMLE exams.
  • Serves as a key liaison between all JABSOM students with the University of Hawai‘i at M?noa Kokua office, coordinating any accommodations for disabilities with appropriate faculty and staff as needed.
  • Provide faculty development sessions that improve teaching (classroom / clinical) and enhance an individual faculty member’s ability to identify and productively work with challenged learners.
  • Coordinate efforts with other members of OSA and OME to support supplementary academic services that complement coursework including, but not limited to, comprehensive USMLE Step 1 and Step 2CK preparation plans and workshops for medical students, and stress-reduction techniques during key periods of finals and preparation for USMLE exams.
  • May conduct scholarly activity and research in other areas beside the above.
  • Serve on University Committees
  • Keep abreast of current literature and professional associations relevant to the area of expertise.
  • Engage in the education and training of faculty, residents, medical and `Imi Ho`?la students
  • Work collaboratively with others in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and OME to design and implement academic skill-building workshops to improve medical student development of life-long learning skills in areas such as time management, critical reasoning, learning strategies, study skills, and test-taking strategies.

ASSISTANT SPECIALIST DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In addition to the duties and responsibilities for Junior Specialist:
  • Contribute to the provision of learning opportunities that promote the achievement and progression of the learners they support.
  • Conduct research that evaluates the delivery of educational programs and faculty development related to student retention and/or student well-being and mental health support.

ASSOCIATE SPECIALIST DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In addition to the duties and responsibilities for an Assistant Specialist:
  • Implement plans that support the school goals to attract and retain an academically talented and diverse student population.
  • Oversee effective planning, delivery and evaluation of programs to support student academic success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
JUNIOR SPECIALIST MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated ability to manage work priorities and projects.
  • Demonstrated ability with program development of academic support (examples could include, but are not limited to individual learning plans, advising, counseling, academic skills building, resiliency skills-building, growth mindset skills-building)
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external groups, stakeholders, team leaders and members, and individuals; facilitate others in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Evidence of research and/or scholarly activity.
  • Evidence of effective teaching and remediation, especially with diverse learner populations, including those with different learning abilities.
  • Experience in assisting students to identify their learning styles and developing their learning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and faculty
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively help in resolving wide-ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative, and timely manner.
  • One year of experience as assistant, or its equivalent represented by successful practice in the appropriate field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Masters or equivalent degree from an accredited institution of higher education in education, psychology, or field related to the duties/responsibilities of this position.

JUNIOR SPECIALIST DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Evidence of scholarly activity/research demonstrating successful learner outcomes.
  • Leadership in designing remediation programs for medical learners (medical students or residents)
  • Skilled in team-building and developing collaborative partnerships.
  • Completion of a fellowship, advanced degree, or certification in medical or health professions education (i.e., M.Ed., MACM, MSEd, or similar) or coaching of medical learners
  • General experience with continuous quality improvement strategies.
  • Familiarity and/or experience with problem-based learning.

ASSISTANT SPECIALIST MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those of Junior Specialist, minimum qualifications include:
  • Proven ability and leadership in program administration.
  • Master’s degree and, in addition to the Master’s degree, 30 credits of graduate study from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position involved;
  • At least three years of experience in the appropriate area at the next lower rank, or its equivalent.

ASSISTANT SPECIALIST DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • General experience with continuous quality improvement strategies.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity/research demonstrating successful learner outcomes.
  • EdD, PhD
  • Experience in working with programs that service indigenous, underrepresented and/or disadvantaged students.
  • Completion of a fellowship, advanced degree, or certification in medical or health professions education (i.e., M.Ed., MACM, MSEd, or similar) or coaching of medical learners
  • Familiarity and/or experience with problem-based learning.
  • Leadership in designing remediation programs for medical learners (medical students or residents)
  • Leadership in team-building and developing collaborative partnerships.

ASSOCIATE SPECIALIST MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those of Assistant Specialist, minimum qualifications include:
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues.
  • Recognition for having made a major contribution to the specialty area.
  • A doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position involved.
  • At least four years of experience in the appropriate specialty at the next lower rank with demonstrated increasing professional maturity including at least two years of experience directly related to the current job assignment.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the work of assistants when appropriate; ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators as necessary.

ASSOCIATE SPECIALIST DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Evidence of scholarly activity/research demonstrating successful learner outcomes.
  • Active participation in medical education-related continuous quality improvement strategies.
  • Leadership in developing and implementing projects or programs requiring collaborative partnerships.
  • Leadership in designing remediation programs for medical learners (medical students or residents)
  • Completion of a fellowship, advanced degree, or certification in medical or health professions education (i.e., M.Ed., MACM, MSEd, or similar) or coaching of medical learners
  • Experience in working with programs that service indigenous, underrepresented and/or disadvantaged students.
  • Experience with problem-based learning.
  • Successful generation of extramural funding in topics related to medical education, learner support, or faculty support/resilience
