Why does the job exist?

To assist the attorneys by providing complex technical legal and administrative support pertaining to complex litigation matters.

How does it get done?

Draft motions, responsive pleading and affidavits for legal review. File pleadings in state court using Odyssey and in federal court using Pacer. Develops and maintains legal files and filing/tracking systems on all court cases, invoices and billings. Prepares necessary forms, as appropriate. Processes a variety of legal forms, completely and accurately, to implement court orders and proceedings. Composes replies to routine correspondence. Answers telephone calls and routine inquires or directs calls to appropriate individuals. Provides assistance with responding to Inspection of Public Record Acts requests. Notarizes documents as needed for our division and the Albuquerque office. Prepares travel and training documentation, and reconciles travels. Calendars court deadlines and pleading response deadlines. Communicates with consumers with updates on cases, as appropriate.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Paralegal, Legal Science, Business, English, History, Communications, Psychology, and/or Sociology and two (2) years of relevant experience to include the preparation and review of legal documents and legal/policy research and analysis. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience or current enrollment with at least two (2) semesters in a Juris Doctorate program from an accredited school of law will substitute for required work experience.

Employment Requirements

Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and complete a Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico within thirty (30) days of hire.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some statewide travel maybe required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
