Job Description

Description:

7000 Languages (www.7000.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to empower communities to teach, learn, and sustain their endangered languages. The organization cooperatively develops free online language-learning courses and materials in partnership with Indigenous, refugee and minority communities in support of their work to reclaim, strengthen, and revitalize their languages. 7000 Languages has supported communities in publishing 55 online courses in 29 languages at zero cost to the communities. The organization integrates innovative technology tools with a focus on resources to meet the unique circumstances of endangered languages, including curriculum development support that centers Indigenous culture, practices, and ways of knowing.

As a part of the Language Revitalization Fellowship Program, you will work within your own community to design lessons, create project plans, and deliver free language learning technology tools.

Meet and learn together as a cohort. Learn about language revitalization tools, practices and strategies (e.g. recording audio, archiving, elicitation techniques, curriculum development tools, grant-writing and more!)

This fellowship is ideal for an independent, driven person who wants to use their passion for language and culture and their organizational skills to make a difference in people’s lives, while learning about the fundamentals of project management, language revitalization, and language learning technology.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals seeking to reclaim, revitalize or maintain their ancestral language. Applicants do not need to be currently enrolled in college/university to apply.

Duties:

  • Test and review new language learning technology tools, including the new 7000 Languages mobile application
  • Share best practices for course creation with Community Partners (e.g. ideal recording conditions, file naming conventions, file storing, etc.)
  • Work with communities and the Program Coordinator or Executive Director to determine the goals, scope & deliverables for language courses
  • Assist communities and engage with your language and/or community through content creation, installing software, designing the courses, writing lessons, and recording audio
  • Work with the Community Engagement manager on building creative marketing content for your assigned language, community and course rollout
  • Manage projects and help keep them on schedule
  • Use proprietary software and other technology tools to process files for publication
  • Maintain course files and keep track of multiple drafts
  • Share success stories with the 7OOO Languages team
  • Work on streamlining and developing technology tools and resources for community use
  • Create language learning materials

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to plan and implement several projects at once while remaining focused and on schedule
  • Self-identifies as Indigenous (preferred)
  • Experience learning or studying a second language
  • Comfortability using technology tools, coding, app development, etc.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous, endangered language, and language revitalization issues
  • Member of a community with an endangered ancestral language (preferred)
  • Working toward a BA/BS in Linguistics, Native American Studies, Computer Science, or a related field (preferred)
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Fellowship, part-time, 1O hrs. per week, 1O-12 weeks in duration with the possibility of an extension

Pay Range: $16-$2O USD per hour

Location: Remote, working on U.S. Eastern Time Zone schedule
