Some of what you'll be doing:

As a skilled laborer you will perform manual work, alone or as part of crew, assisting equipment operations and inspections to assess, clean, maintain, and repair infrastructure.

  • You will demonstrate the ability to pour concrete and finish to grade.
  • You will perform excavation projects and support underground utility installations.
  • You will assist with stormwater system repairs and maintenance, including storm drain structures, piping and ditches, catch basins, and treatment systems, and assist with digging, backfilling and asphalt work.
  • You will install and repair various types of fence and gates.
  • You will work in facilities maintenance performing preventative maintenance on building, grounds, and piers.
  • You will support other tasks as needed to help the crews when other work arises within the field.
  • You will work from heights on roofs and in manlifts to clean, repair and install different types of roofing.
  • You will maintain a safe work area for the work crew and public, to include but not limited to cones, barricades, and warning devices that directs traffic at work sites.
Who you are:
  • Safety Conscious – You are knowledgeable in Construction Safety best practices, particularly when digging around live utilities. You keep an eye out for various hazards and immediately correct unsafe conditions.

  • Experienced – You completed an approved Laborer apprenticeship program or equivalent.
  • Knowledgeable – You have an extensive experience in facility maintenance, excavation, underground utilities installations, concrete, asphalt, fence and gate installation and repair and roofing installation and repair.
  • Customer Focused – You have a strong customer service mindset with both internal and external customers, modeling that behavior for the rest of the team and deliver excellent service under pressure during stressful/emergency situations.
  • Educated – You possess a High School Diploma or GED.
What else you need to know:
  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
  • Work Environment – You will generally work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
  • Union Representation – This position is represented by Laborers union, Local 242.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Overtime Eligible – You are eligible for overtime pay in this role.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement – Effective, November 15, 2021, the Port of Seattle will require that at the time of hire, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be able to provide proof of their full COVID-19 vaccination status, as part of the hiring process. This is a condition of employment for all positions at the Port of Seattle.
