The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Associate Clinical Director, the Laboratory Manager will assume oversight for the day-to-day operations of the Columbia Health clinical laboratory. The Laboratory Manger performs complex medical laboratory tests for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of the lab, including but not limited to: instrument and equipment, users of the lab, and supplies needed to ensure the lab runs smoothly. Under the guidance of the Associate Clinical Director, they will establish and enforce standard operating procedures (SOP) and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance in accordance with internal and external regulatory requirements. The Laboratory Manager will serve as a technical resource to Medical Services providers and laboratory staff, ensure technical issues are resolved before testing is performed, operate and troubleshoot all equipment needed to accomplish laboratory tests. They will ensure that manufacturer procedures and protocols are always followed in order to achieve credentialing and regulatory body compliance. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for supervision of laboratory staff, training, and quality control within the lab.
Responsibilities
Specimen Processing and Technical Protocol 50%
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the laboratory and specimen processing, collects and process clinical specimens such as CBC, Sedimentation rates, morphology gram strains, monospot, urinalysis, platelet counts, urine pregnancy tests, urine microscopy, rapid HIV testing, rapid influenza testing, etc., and perform point-of-care tests.
Process specimens (centrifuging, separating, numbering, labelling, organizing etc.) for subsequent testing by the laboratory staff.
Document all procedural deviations from established SOP and test non-conformities for review by the Associate Clinical Director.
Resolve daily technical issues and instrument failure and document for review.
Respond to LabCorp requests for information regarding insurance and billing information; investigate errors in lab billing type during accessioning of lab specimens.
Document and maintain records associated with laboratory testing procedures.
Staff Supervision and Competency Training 30%
Manage laboratory staff for efficient workflow and supervise daily test performed by lab personnel (medical assistants, phlebotomists).
Oversees laboratory issues including staffing, time off requests and customer service concerns.
Prioritize daily workload for self and direct reports, reviews logs, record, and investigate outliers.
Administers initial and annual in-service laboratory competency assessments for clinical providers and laboratory personnel.
Train staff in a variety of laboratory procedures. Provides technical guidance and instructions to laboratory personnel and other Medical Services providers.
Ensures staff compliance with all lab policies and procedures.
Quality Control and Safety Compliance 15%
Manage daily Quality Control (QC) including laboratory processes to ensure that acceptable levels of functional performance are maintained (including QC, equipment maintenance, other QA).
Ensures adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents and assist in the evaluation of new equipment, reagents and methodologies.
Maintains accurate and extensive documentation in accordance with internal and external regulatory agencies.
Attends continuing education, safety and compliance training as necessary.
Ensures that remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
Oversees the proper handling and disposal of specimen and red-bag waste. Complies with laboratory safety policies and procedures including the use of applicable personal protective equipment (PPE).
Monitors refrigerator temperature charts and change weekly, inspect temperature logs and facilitate repairs and maintenance of refrigerators.
Performed other duties as directed and assigned 5%
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent experience required.
Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience working in a laboratory with complex instrumentation and complex laboratory procedures.
Must be licensed as a clinical laboratory technologist in the state of New York.
Must demonstrate a high level of independent thinking and excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
Ability to identify and support implementation of best practices within a clinical laboratory setting.
Extensive experience with laboratory procedures, and managing laboratory resources.
Ability to utilize knowledge of specific laboratory protocols and, train others.
Must be highly organized, with demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize workload.
Excellent track record of follow-up with collaborators, physicians, and other internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrate quality of work including accuracy, timeliness, professionalism and thoroughness.

Previous experience managing laboratory personnel
