Position Summary
Under guidance, manages the operational activities of research laboratories and supervises of a variety of activities related to the planning, performance and supervision of basic and/or clinical research.
Job Responsibilities
- Maintains records in compliance with all government licensing regulations, including the proper labeling of all material.
- Assists principle investigators and post-docs with the preparation of budgets and other regulatory items for grant submission and clinical trial applications.
- Provides orientation, training and supervision of staff, students, visiting scientists and new lab members in the application and use of new equipment as well as maintaining and following the standard operating procedures for laboratory activities.
- Embalms and prepares cadaveric specimens upon receipt of a donation.
- Maintains and overseas the proper preservation of human cadavers human cadaveric material.
- Handles the preparations and receipt of donor bodies, ensuring bodies meet selection criteria as required by law and in compliance with the Medical College and Hospital policies.
- Ensures that facilities and equipment are in optimal and proper working condition. Coordinates preventative maintenance and repairs as needed. May perform minor repairs if qualified and as needed. May advise on upgrades for performance enhancements.
- Leads and participates in new assay development and test system validations.
- Monitors the financial and accounting activities of the laboratory.
- Ensures laboratory is in compliance with the Weill Cornell Medicine, local, state and federal regulatory requirements.
- Develops, implements and enforces policies and procedures to support laboratory safety, efficiency and quality control.
- Negotiates prices with external vendors for the purchase of equipment and places orders for all equipment.
- Works closely with funeral directors and donors and/or their next of kin with regards to the operation of the donation program.
- Generates reports for analysis.
- Ensures the safe, timely and appropriate processing, storage and shipping of biological specimens.
- Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment and/or reagents. May order supplies/equipment/reagents as authorized or ensure that needs are escalated appropriately. Receives supply orders and confirms accuracy of delivery. May assist with cost control.
- Ensures that education, certification, and training requirements are met for all lab personnel.
- Overseas that the anatomy lab and cadaver preparation rooms are cleaned and maintained on a daily basis.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in related field
Experience
Approximately 3-5 years of laboratory management experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to foster positive relationships with Principal Investigators and clinical, scientific and administrative leadership.
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
